Hello Kitty, Kitty... AMAZING Inspiration from
Maria Soto

Hi there, this is Maria bringing you an inspiration post today. I have to admit that I love cats, I love dogs too (little ones best). We have rescued three beautiful cats, two girls that are now between 6 - 4yrs old; and last year we rescued a little boy kitten. Let's say he has us all going crazy, since he is really something else. I sometimes feel like I have a one year old kid driving me crazy one minute, and smiling and feeling happy the next. It may sound crazy that I've compared my kitten to a little kid, but he is very playful and a bit of a trouble maker.

One of my sisters has been saving cats and dogs for years now, and recently found a great community group that is made up of volunteers to help cats. This group is about to have a HUGE garage sale for a fundraiser and I thought it would be nice to make some cute magnets or little plaques about cats. I got busy over the weekend with an idea I had and hoped it would work. I'm very happy with the results and can't wait to make a lot more to donate to the fundraiser and hope that they sell.

I took a blank coaster I had on hand and used my hot glue to make the outline of a cat. Once cooled I had the image done... and it was time to get started.

Here is the coaster, as you can see I added the cat's outline with hot glue. I didn't want the lines too thick. This came out just as I wanted, and the great thing is you can remove the hot glue and make other images... then make more molds.

I decided to work with Amazing Mold Putty because I wanted to work fast. Then I decided to use the Amazing Casting Resin not only because it cures in about 10 minutes, depending on the temperature, but also because I love how this particular resin allows you to color it after it's cured. I wanted to use my Tim Holtz's Mini Distress Inks to color the casts, and finish it up by sealing all the color added by applying a little coat of Amazing Clear Cast Resin.

Here is my first casting. I can't wait to make more.
This mold can actually make some cute coasters!

After I created my first casting and colored, I added some Amazing Clear Cast Resin to the mold then placed the original casting back in the mold. I didn't think about the bubbles that can get trapped inside – and as you can see, there were quite a few. I actually like it, it gives it a more distressed look. So back to trying things another way.

I mixed another batch of Amazing Casting Resin and created another kitty coaster. I really enjoyed this project, got my hands a bit dirty, but that's OK with me, I love using my finger to paint, and this was pretty much the same. Now I have to get busy and make a couple more molds with different cat faces to add variety. We'll see if we can sell these to raise money to help some homeless cats and kitten in finding some new forever homes.

These photos show how I applied the colors – one at a time.
First on the face, then on the outside and finally the edges.

Then I used a paper towel to blend them in, leaving the black ink for last.

Now this is the finished project {the second one pictured above}, and all it now needs is a coat of Amazing Clear Cast Resin {instead of adding the resin to the mold as I did with my first piece}. I will add the clear cast resin over the entire piece little by little using the mixing stick to keep the Distress Ink colors from blending even more and to prevent any bubbles.

Here is the finished piece – I added the black at the end
to add highlights and make all the other colors pop.

How would you customize your coasters
