Making a CAMEO... Immortalized in PLASTER by Lynne Suprock

Hello fellow artists and crafters! Lynne here today to share a fun tutorial using Amazing Mold Putty to create Cameo wall hangings out of Plaster of Paris.

You will need:
  • An item you would like to mold for a wall hanging. I selected vintage plaques that I found at a flea market.
  • A non stick craft mat
  • Amazing Mold Putty
  • Mold Release Spray
  • Plaster of Paris
  • Water
  • Wooden stir stick
  • Large container for mixing plaster
  • 20 gauge wire, 2" per plaque
  • Round nose pliers to bend wire
  • Matte gel medium
  • Paint brush for gel application

My plaques have quite a bit of chipped, peeling paint going on. This will add to the distressed look that I am after when the Amazing Mold Putty conforms to the chipped texture of the pieces.

Amazing Mold Putty comes in Part "A" and Part "B". Mix equal amounts of each into one ball of uniform color {CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}.

Work quickly because the Amazing Mold Putty will begin to set after several minutes. To keep mold putty from sticking to jewelry or finger nails, you can wear gloves. However, the Amazing Mold Putty is non toxic.

Next press the Amazing Mold Putty onto the front of the piece that you wish to mold. Make sure you cover the complete piece.

Let the piece set up, then demold to show the cameo mold. Lay the piece, mold side up on a flat surface and mix up a little more of the Amazing Mold Putty. This time, shape the putty into a long noodle piece to completely surround your item. Amazing Mold Putty will fuse to itself unless a mold release agent is being used. Attach the noodle to the existing edge of the Amazing Mold Putty on the front of your plaque. Let cure.

Finished mold. Before pouring plaster, apply a light coat of mold release to the mold.

Mix the Plaster of Paris with water according to the directions on your box. Directions may vary by manufacturer. Stir with a wooden stick. Work quickly because the plaster will become warm and start to thicken in a few minutes.

Pour the plaster into the mold, filling to the edge of the mold.

Bend the wire with pliers and position into the back of the poured plaster. Let your project sit over night, and if your mold is thick, two nights in a warm, dry room. The drying process is hastened if there is air movement over the piece, such as with a fan on low.

If you do not let the piece completely dry, it will break apart when you demold it... which is just what happened with this one! Uh oh! Oh no!

This one dried for two days. Once taken out of the Amazing Mold Putty mold, coat with acrylic gel medium. Let dry. Your piece is ready to hang!

I love the white bisque look of plaster. However, you could also paint your piece with assorted acrylic paints or add highlights with a metallic paste. Enjoy experimenting with Amazing Casting Products, such as Amazing Mold Putty in your mixed media projects!

#Cre8time Play with Nuts and Bolts for Mold Rubber Monday... by Susan M. Brown {sbartist}

Good evening Amazing Crafters! Susan dropping by for Mold Rubber Monday. Today I'm going to share a little collaborative project I have been working on with Tina Walker of Frog Dog Studio. Together, we joined creative forces to hand-make hundreds of screws, bolts and other hardware baubles that were included in the March Frog Dog Studio Kits. This project started with two molds using Amazing Mold Rubber... and then the AMAZING crafting ensued.

With the hardware selected, I prepared a mold box for the similar sized bolts – constructed from a cylinder of paper hot glued to a recycled plastic container lid. I also hot glued the bolts, screw end down to the lid base.  I prepared an entire container of Amazing Mold Rubber to create two molds {please CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}.

**NOTE TO SELF**
Don't do it this way next time!

Why, you ask??! Because I had to cut multiple slices into the mold to free each and every bolt from the mold. I can pour resin into the mold, but now since I had to slice numerous cuts to release bolts, I get a lot of air bubbles along the screw threads. Oh well, it was a learning experience... back to the drawing board. I remade the mold of bolts using the next process.

For the second of the molds created for the smaller nuts and other hardware... I tried a different approach – this way works much better! YAY!!! I remade the mold for the bolts this way with the bolt heads down and the screw posts facing up. In the photo above, the mold box is a round metal tin lid that is about 3/4" deep. I sprayed a generous coating of 3M Spray Mount and let it tack up {meaning I set it aside to dry for about 10 minutes}.

Then I rubbed the inside the center of each nut and wingnut with a Q-tip coated with olive oil spray for ease of mold release. I pressed each item into the spray adhesive and then poured the Amazing Mold Rubber over slowly. I gently poked around inside of each nut center to release any air bubbles then set aside to cure. This made a perfect mold – so I repeated for mass production.

I repeated this to create molds with numerous pieces of various hardware. The wingnuts proved a little difficult to pour resin into without trapping air bubbles, so I created another mold just for them using Amazing Mold Putty. This left the wings open for ease in pouring resin.

Now it was time for casting our pieces in Amazing Casting Resin, over and over and over... even in white - the metal hardware look like works of art... but completely ready to be dyed, painted, inked, sprayed or rusted for addition to any mixed media creation.

So with a little planning, you can make molds with multiples of items for casting with ease.

What hardware will you mold
for your mixed-media projects?

Make Your #Cre8time SEW Much FUN with Custom Fabric Weights... by Isabel Villarreal

Spring is just around the corner and in preparation for the bright days ahead I've been crafting furiously to get my house ready for a colorful update. Cutting fabric for my craft projects is probably the most time consuming part of crafting so using fabric weights makes the cutting process faster and easier by holding the pattern or fabric layers in place while I'm cutting. They are especially great if you are using a rotary cutter. Nice weights can be a little pricey so after some thought I figured I would make my very own fabric weights using Amazing Crafting Products and a couple of other things I had around the house.

I already own a set of fabric weights, but I just needed a few more. So I used some Amazing Mold Putty to create a mold. During my mad search for casting tools, I discovered that plastic water bottles make the best containers for molding small objects so I cut about 3/4 of the bottle away from the base and pushed my mixed putty inside then pressed the weight into it and let it set. The only thing is, you can't reuse the plastic. I had to cut the plastic away in order to remove the mold once it was set.

These were made by pouring 2 separate layers of Amazing Clear Cast Resin. In order to give a hint of color I added a drop of Alumilite Florescent "FLO" Red Dye to the first layer. You can see that I mixed in some glitter and small star shaped candy for the first layer. The second layer is where the weight is added- I used some bird shot that my boyfriend had in the tool shed to fill the second half of the mold then poured more Clear Cast with a drop of Florescent "FLO" Yellow Dye over it.

When I removed it from the mold it was a little dull, so I just brushed a very thin coat of Amazing Clear Cast Resin over the whole thing to give it a little more clarity. Now you can clearly see both layers. I love my new fabric weights! I settled on star shaped candy sprinkles and glitter, but you can actually use just about anything to add some zing to your fabric weights and make them your own.

How would you customize your fabric weights?

I'd love to see what you create! Please upload and share your creations to the
