A #Cre8time tale of a Creepy Doll and the Papier Mache Mask... by Sandra Strait

Sandra Strait here today to tell you how I made this creepy doll from an innocent and rosy-cheeked little porcelain baby.

Supplies: Amazing Mold Putty and Amazing Casting Resin, Golden's Micaceous Iron Oxide Acrylic Paint, a tiny porcelain doll.

My mother used to clean and paint porcelain dolls, making little dresses for them. This one lost her feet and one of her hands -- so sad! -- and Mom was going to throw here away. Visions of Frozen Charlottes flashed through my head, and I said ... "I'll take care of that!"

I wasn't too sure how this was going to work. The doll has joints that would look odd if I took off the dress -- though I may try a mold without it one of these days. But for now, I wanted to see how well I could get the dress.

After rolling out the same amounts of putty part "A" and putty part "B", I mixed them together until everything turned yellow, and flattened out the ball so it was larger than the doll.

Then I just smooshed her face down into the putty. I could hear a little voice in my head screaming "Oh! Mr Bill!" (am I the only one old enough to get that reference?).

I thought about casting the back of the doll as well, but I didn't really need it for what I had in mind, and I wanted to see how well the dress worked first, anyway.

For complete instructions on using Amazing Casting Resin, please visit the Amazing Casting Products website.

After I removed the doll from the cast (the doll incurred no injuries, but the dress did get stained yellow), I mixed up some Amazing Casting Resin and poured it into the mold. After about five minutes, I took it out, trimmed off any ragged edges and rubbed some of the acrylic paint over it to pick out the detail. The dress came out better than I thought it might.

I've done a review on a Decopatch Queen Papier Mache Mask (and there's a giveaway, too!) and the creepy doll was used as the headpiece for the crown – CLICK HERE to jump over.

I'll be doin' Halloween and
Day of the Dead in style!

It's a Tag! It's a Tangle! It's an AMAZING Mold Putty Piece by Sandra Strait

Hi, this is Sandra. I was invited to be a the guest designer at the Anything But a Card Challenges blog for their upcoming August challenge {which officially launches Sunday, August 3rd at 9am EST}, and I'm here to share the project I created. This is a little sneak peek!

It's a Tag! It's a Tangle! It's an Amazing Mold Putty Piece!
Yes! It's all those things and more!

The theme for the Anything But a Card Challenges August Challenge will be "REPEATING Motifs" a.k.a. PATTERNS.

For my challenge piece, I glued string to a manila tag, using the Zentangle® pattern Hibred. Of course, this is also a pattern of great antiquity that you may have seen decorating walls or used in quilting or gourd painting. But the Zentangle pattern breaks it down into nice, easy steps so anyone can draw it. The steps worked well for my tag. Instead of drawing a line, I just glued down a piece of string.

Once I had my tag complete, I created a mold with Amazing Mold Putty {please CLICK HERE for mixing/preparation}.

The casting was a bit of an experiment. I poured Amazing Casting Resin into the deepest parts first {please CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}.

Then I laid down three kinds of paper scraps
(repeating each type, so they became a pattern as well).

Then I poured a second batch of Amazing Casting Resin, and used a popsicle stick to keep the paper as flat as possible. Of course, some of the resin leaked around the paper, but that means every time I do this, I'll get a unique piece of art.

I pulled my piece from the mold as soon as the Amazing Casting Resin was solid so I could trim off bits that stuck out. I could also easily add a few more holes to increase the 'lace' look.

At this point, the tag made me think of Christmas Trees. I thought of painting it that way, but the theme for this challenge is "Repeating Motifs" and I wanted to bring the pattern out a little more.

So I tinted the lines of the Hibred pattern, and called it a day.

The piece is kinda neat. When it's lying on a desk or paper, it looks frosty and lacy. When you hold it up to the light, it turns luminescent, and the embedded paper casts interesting shadows and colors. I still have the original tag, which I had glued to foam core, so I can use it as stamp and for gelli plate printing. What AMAZING possibilities!

I urge you to visit the Anything But a Card Challenges blog. The August challenge will be up soon... and since you already know the theme – you can start your project now. Please do not share it before the new challenge starts {challenge officially begins this upcoming Sunday, August 3rd at 9am EST}! Remember, it can be ANYTHING -- but a card!

AMAZING Inspiration from Sandra Strait... Fisherman's Paradise Brush Holder

Happy Memorial Day all! Sandra here today to bring you some out-of-the-box inspiration today. I take daily vitamins, which means, every month I end up with a cool container of a goodly size, perfect for crafting!

I've been piling them up (or giving them away) waiting for inspiration to strike, and when I saw these Mylar sheets in a local craft store, inspiration struck! BANG!!! So, I glued the Mylar sheets onto the containers.

Then I cut illustration board and a textured shelf-liner into the shapes of three fish. When I cast them in Amazing Casting Resin, I used a mixture of Alumilite Metallic Powders dusted into my molds, so I'd have a clutch of colorful fishies.

My tip for today: Illustration board makes a good base for a shallow mold. If you have an object too thin to mold by itself or want to create your own object, cut the illustration board into the shape you want and glue or tape thin objects to it. Shelf liner, drywall tape, micro-marbles – the list of items that can add texture is endless! Then just press it into your Amazing Mold Putty.

I always keep the bits and pieces of resin that overflow my molds, and I used these to create the ripples of water and added lace at top and bottom to finish off the container.

Voilà, I had a Fisherman's Paradise brush holder!

AMAZING Inspiration from Sandra Strait...

I’m so excited to be a guest designer for the Amazing Crafting Products Creative Team! I was asked to do an inspiration post, so I’m going to try and make you as excited about these products as I am.

For my sister-in-law’s birthday, I wanted to give her something practical that was still a work of art. I happened on a spiral-bound notebook of window envelopes. Merri’s always looking for things to put her papers in, so I knew this was perfect for my project.

A magazine page from an old quilting magazine, a layer of Amate woven bark paper, and oh, so many objects-watch parts, screws, shower rings, beaded bracelets, plastic packaging – all molded in Amazing Mold Putty and created with Creative Paperclay®. Twine, fiber paste and drywall tape were added for contrast and this functional book of envelopes looks like a treasure trove washed up on a sandy beach. Now I just have to decorate each envelope with tangle patterns, and she’ll have artful inspiration for every day.

Now the great thing is that I can easily recreate this cover and make similar gifts for other people! I like that. Inspiration gets stretched around Christmas time and I love ideas I can retread.

My tip for today: If you are looking for something to mold (and once you start, you’ll keep looking!), consider breaking something you don’t need. Seriously. I don’t recommend breaking glass or items that splinter, but pop open those old watches, break off a piece of coconut shell, tear up that old crafting project and mold those rolled paper roses you made long ago. Look beneath the surface and you’ll find textures, and objects that you never dreamed were there.
