Making my #Cre8time List and Checking it Twice... a Tutorial by Lynne Suprock

Hello again my Amazing Crafting Products friends! Lynne Suprock, here with another tutorial – making an artful bookplate using Amazing Casting Resin and a stencil.

I am soon off to teach at a beloved art retreat this fall in Stamford, CT. There is always much to pack and prepare for any of the "on the road" venues. It behooves one to begin weeks ahead as to not fall into a "tizzy." Well, good for me, I am a ducks in a row type art girl. I will make the lists and check once, twice, and three times! And with time left over, will also come up with a few last minute project or surprises.

This year besides the necessary instructional materials and kits, part of my packing will include a few beloved art trades and other fun things, such as this awesome art notebook. Let me share a quick tutorial on how to make one of your own.   :-)

Please enjoy this video tutorial... An Art Notebook Plate

Mold Rubber Monday brings an AMAZING Art Journal Cover by Rachel Whetzel

Hello, gang!! Remember the vintage books I shared with you last year? I finally had the chance to mold one of them, and create a totally unique and pretty-cool-if-I-do-say-so-myself-and-I-do-say-so-myself, Art Journal for this coming year at The Precinct (AKA A Year in the Life of An Art Journal).

To create one of your OWN journals...

Here's what you'll need:
  • A really cool, old book that you don't mind the possibility of ruining. (I'll share more about that later)
  • A shallow tray of some sort for casting in.
  • Amazing Mold Rubber
  • Amazing Clear Cast Resin
  • Blue Alumilite Dye
  • Krylon Matte Finish Artist' Spray Paint
  • Acrylic Paints
  • All the bits and bobbles, ephemera, etc. that you want to decorate your cover with. (I'll leave that up to you)

Let's get started!!
Click any of the images here to view them larger.

This art journal began with the idea I had to use Amazing Mold Rubber to cast a mold of some of my favorite vintage books with cool textures and embossing on them. For this project, I chose my Women's Institute Library of Cookery book from my bunch. It's 5 and 1/2 inches by 9 inches, and a nice middle of the road size for an art journal.

To get the book ready for casting, I took the cover apart, keeping the front and back. I sealed them using matte finish clear spray paint.

You can see a bit of the embossing on the cover in the photo above. This step alone "wrecked" my book cover, because the paint dried slightly opaque. When I say to use a book you don't mind losing the original of, I really mean it.

Once the paint was dry, I mixed and poured Amazing Mold Rubber into a glass tray I had purchased for this job. GO HERE for video instructions on mixing and pouring Amazing Mold Rubber. In hind sight, I would have used a mold release on both my book cover AND my tray, because I ended up nearly losing the entire project when the mold rubber took too well to both pieces. I don't know why I didn't do that in the first place!! Alumilite has a Mold Release, and I have it in my stash! You can also use Vaseline as a release agent. I would have used it on my tray to help the mold rubber release from it. Lay your cover face down in the mold rubber, and press it in. I didn't use an anchor for my pieces, because items will naturally float to the surface of Amazing Mold Rubber. I kept an eye on my cover and kept pressing the pieces down every once in a while to ensure they were in the rubber deep enough. Once the Amazing Mold Rubber started to cure and set up, I didn't have to press them in any more.

It took some considerable doing, once the rubber set, to pull my book cover out of the mold. This is why I mention using a book you don't mind chancing getting ruined. As I mentioned above, I also had a tough time getting the Amazing Mold Rubber to release from the glass. Again, something I would fix with a release agent in the future. For this project, I managed to get things out by cutting the mold in half, and using a LOT of elbow grease!! Be careful, though! I did rip my mold a bit. Thankfully, when you press the mold back into it's tray to pour, seams like that seal back up for the pour.

I had ideas that my cover was going to look like ice, so to get an icy look, I used just a DOT of Blue Alumilite Dye in my Amazing Clear Cast Resin before I poured it into the mold. I used a toothpick, dipped into the tip of the dye bottle, and used that dye to tint the Clear Cast Resin. Here's a view of the resin and mold mid removal once everything had cured.

I got busy decorating the cover of my art journal using glitter on the edges, and pieces of ephemera all around on it. My word for the year is FOCUS... so I used the clear surface of the journal to add dimension by putting ephemera in layers on top AND behind the resin, giving the eye LOTS of places to focus! (What can I say... it's the details, people. Details like that make me REALLY happy.) I used some acrylic paints and wiped some of it off to draw out the texture of the original book, and help the embossed part of the cover show well. It was tricky to photograph it! (check out the reflection of the sun off the glitter at the top of the pic!)

In keeping with the Kitchy feel of the 30's and 40's from the original book, I used some old Blue Chip and True Value stamps, some vintage pom pom trim, crepe paper, seam binding ribbon and measuring tape Washi.

I used ephemera from Gauche Alchemy to create pages to fill the inside of my journal! I also used some punchinella from the store to stencil on some of my pages, as well as on the cover. You can GO HERE to see more of those pages!

So, even though this project had a bit of trail and error in it, I managed to get a finished piece that I LOVE, and could make more of!! I'm using this journal for my year long art journal and photography project THE PRECINCT. You can see how I'll be using it in the prompts HERE!

Molding Book Covers... Why NOT??? AMAZING Inspiration with Rachel Whetzel

Hello there, Creatives!! Rachel Whetzel here. I am a book addict. The older, the crustier, the cooler they are. It's not very often a trip "just to check and see if they have anything" at the thrift store ends up in my leaving without at least one book. I always have ideas to use the covers to make art journals, and I actually HAVE done that before, and I love it. I have also always really dug the look of clear acrylic journals and mini scrapbooks. Add to all of that, the fact that some of my MOST COOL book covers have some really cool embossed details on them... and then I realized... I could make some copies of the covers of my favorite textured books, and make some pretty cool art journal covers!!

Now I am inspired to try molding some of these covers and creating some textured copies to play with. I think Amazing Mold Rubber might be the best molding material for the job because of it's ability to capture the tiniest details.

What unusual copies are you INSPIRED
to create using Amazing Crafting Products?

Please share your projects in the comments below! If you create something inspired by my idea, please leave a comment with a link here, so I can come and visit to see! I would love for you to visit me at my "house" too!! Thank you so much for reading!! ~ rachel

Never Leave Home without a Book Thong for Your Summer Beach Read... AMAZING Inspiration from Carole Lassak

Hi!! Carole here to inspire you with a quick, easy and fun project. Even though I have several electronic gadgets for reading a book – Kindle, tablet, iPhone – I still like the feel of the paper in my hands. On those occasions I need a way to mark my place. What is better than a handmade book thong!!

I created these from pieces I cast using Amazing Casting Resin in molds that I made using Amazing Mold Putty.

Cord, a few beads, knots, and crimps added to the resin charms equals a book thong. I used my Dremel to drill the hole for the cord in the resin charms.

What's on your summer reading list that could
use a book thong to mark your place?

You can see more projects using Amazing Crafting Products on my Create & Craft blog. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Edgar Allen Poe Mini Books... an AMAZING Tutorial
by Isabel Villarreal

Hi there! This is Isabel and in the next few steps I'll show you how easy it is to make your own mini books using Amazing Crafting Products, some fabric and a little imagination.

This month I'm focusing on creative things to do with old books and book pages. In continuing with my obsession for all things Poe, I'm making as many things as possible with my old tattered Edgar Allan Poe story collection. These mini books stand as individual art pieces as well as making unique jewelry pieces. As an added treat they each have their own hidden secrets inside.

To begin, I took some old flyers and cut them down to the size and shape I wanted for the books. I made two stacks: one thick stack for the body of the book and another thin stack for the cover. Each stack was glued together using craft glue between each layer. Once the glue dried, I used an exacto knife to hollow out the centers of both books, leaving the "covers" intact.

I will be creating a whole "set" of 6 books, so instead of spending hours making individual paper books, I used Amazing Mold Putty to create a mold that would yield multiple copies in minutes. I wasn't sure if the Mold Putty would stick to the paper so to avoid a set back, I coated the paper "books" with a protective layer of Mod Podge®. Mixing equal parts of "A" & "B", I made a small amount of Amazing Mold Putty to fill the hollow areas first. Leaving the set putty in the center, I then mixed enough putty to cover the rest of the book, with the hollowed out part facing down. The Amazing Mold Putty set in about 10 minutes leaving 2 perfect molds that I could use over and over again. Perfect!!

If you've never used Amazing Casting Resin, you have got to try this stuff! I measured equal parts of "A" & "B" and mixed them together in a small paper cup until the mixture was clear. Once it was clear, I immediately poured the mixture into my molds and allowed it to set for 10 minutes. I repeated the process for each of the books I'm making. As you can see, I'm working with 2 different book sizes. In about 30 minutes I had a complete set of 6 molded and cast mini books ready for decoration.

I prepared some Sculpey clay, and I cut pages out of my Poe story collection ( I used 6 different stories) and fabric pieces to size and prepared to get creative. Using the Sculpey clay, I sculpted small pieces fitting each story theme to place inside the mini books. When the clay was ready I painted the hollowed out centers of the books and painted and glued the sculpted pieces. The next step was to coat the cast mini books with craft glue and paste the cut book pages in place. For the hollowed parts I glued the paper pages in place and when they were dry I used an exacto to carefully cut out the centers.

Use craft glue to coat the outside of the mini books and press the fabric into place. Be sure to pay special attention to the "spine" of the book. The fabric will act as the binding to hold the two book pieces together and allow it to open and close easily. Now glue the cover image and you've got a mini book! As a final step I used Amazing Clear Cast Resin to seal the inside and front cover of the book. Along the white resin edges, I used Alumilite Bronze metallic powder mixed with Acrylic Gloss Medium to give the "pages" a gilded look. I made 2 sets of these - one as a complete set for shelf display and on the other set I attached bails to use them as one-of-a-kind wearable art pendants.

You can use this idea to make a keepsake box for a lock of hair, a first tooth or any other precious memento. Make your mini book personal by replacing the cover image with a baby's photo, an image of a loved one or any snap shot of a special moment.

What secrets will your mini book hold?

I'd love to see what you create! Please upload and share your creations to the NEW
user GALLERY on the Amazing Mold Putty Website for all the world to see.

AMAZING Inspiration from Sandra Strait...

I’m so excited to be a guest designer for the Amazing Crafting Products Creative Team! I was asked to do an inspiration post, so I’m going to try and make you as excited about these products as I am.

For my sister-in-law’s birthday, I wanted to give her something practical that was still a work of art. I happened on a spiral-bound notebook of window envelopes. Merri’s always looking for things to put her papers in, so I knew this was perfect for my project.

A magazine page from an old quilting magazine, a layer of Amate woven bark paper, and oh, so many objects-watch parts, screws, shower rings, beaded bracelets, plastic packaging – all molded in Amazing Mold Putty and created with Creative Paperclay®. Twine, fiber paste and drywall tape were added for contrast and this functional book of envelopes looks like a treasure trove washed up on a sandy beach. Now I just have to decorate each envelope with tangle patterns, and she’ll have artful inspiration for every day.

Now the great thing is that I can easily recreate this cover and make similar gifts for other people! I like that. Inspiration gets stretched around Christmas time and I love ideas I can retread.

My tip for today: If you are looking for something to mold (and once you start, you’ll keep looking!), consider breaking something you don’t need. Seriously. I don’t recommend breaking glass or items that splinter, but pop open those old watches, break off a piece of coconut shell, tear up that old crafting project and mold those rolled paper roses you made long ago. Look beneath the surface and you’ll find textures, and objects that you never dreamed were there.

For more of my work in Amazing Mold Putty, zentangle-inspired art, and daily links to tangles, tutorials, and giveaways please visit my "Life Imitates Doodles" blog.   ~ Sandra Strait

BoooooOOOoooook

Hey Everybody, It's Edie!

Normally I have a strict rule about waiting until October 1, to start watching Halloween movies or looking at Halloween decorations in stores. I don’t want all of the spook and excitement to be over before the season even begins. However, this year, I will be making a TON of Halloween themed projects, so I figured I better get a head start!

Hocus Pocus is one of my all time FAVORTIE movies! We watch it every Halloween without fail and someday I WILL make one of those witch costumes. Christopher and I decided to watch Hocus Pocus last week and I made the offhand comment that we should make Book. Before I had even finished the sentence, technique ideas flooded my brain and I exclaimed “We should make BOOK!!!!”

So… we did!

You can view the video with a full picture tutorial below.

Thank the Spirits for HDTV and a pause button! I have scrutinized this book for days and tried to get every detail as close as I possibly could. I found the perfect book to alter at my local thrift store. I thinned some of the pages and hollowed the middle of the book.

Next I started sculpting. I made the first knotted snake on a base using polymer clay. I started making the second snake but it was not tuning out as good as the first, so after some mental debating, I decided it would be much better to have a mold. I mixed up some Amazing Mold Putty® and created a mold for my knotted snakes. Since Amazing Mold Putty is oven safe, I was able to fire my polymer clay right in the mold which helped a lot! I made the two long snakes and the basic eyeball shape, also using polymer clay then fired them all in the oven for about an hour.

While the snakes were baking, I started working on the spine of the book. I sculpted the fingers with polymer clay, then I debated on how to fire them. If I pulled them off of the book, I risked ruining the shape and fit. If I left them on the book, I risked setting my house on fire. I decided a more precise replica was worth the risk, do after much dowsing with water, I put the book in the oven.

The original Book has an intricate clasp, with a circlet around the eyeball on the front, an animal claw on the back and a braided piece connecting them in the middle. I needed the clasp to be sturdy and hold up to regular wear and tear, so back to the polymer clay I went. I created the circlet and added a gem on the end. I had to make sure if fit exactly around the eye, yet still leave room for the stitches. Once that was finished, I sculpted the animal claw for the back, again leaving room for the stitches. I added tiny hinges to each piece, and then created the connecting braid to fit. All of the pieces were fired then painted with a coat of black, then layers of metallic silver to create the look of aged metal.

The next step was adding the stitches. I decided to use Creative Paperclay® instead of polymer for the stitches because I really didn’t want to have to bake the book two more times. I added Paperclay logs, and then sculpted the cuts and thread holes with a tool.

I painted the eyeball and attached it to the cover of the book, then using more Creative Paperclay® I sculpted the eye lids and creases of the eye.

I needed to create the look of skin, so I covered the entire book with layers of tissue paper until I reached the desired look. Next came three coats of paint in flesh tones and titan buff, and that was just the under painting!

I still needed to darken and age the book, so I created several different washes of brown paint and just layered it on until I was happy with the color and look of the book.

While the cover was drying, I painted all of the large pieces, first with a coat of black, then layers of metallic silver to match the clasp. I made the base plates for the long snakes by embossing chipboard, then painting them to match the other pieces.

The stitching was the trickiest part for me because no matter what thread I used, nothing looked right and everything kept raveling. It wasn’t until I tried using help cord that I got the look I wanted. I spent four and a half hours cutting and gluing each individual thread on the book.

Once everything was set and dry, I glued all of the large pieces to the book using E-6000. I let it set for a full 24 hours before moving on to the final step.

For the finishing touch, I added actual spells from the movie to the front of the book. I printed my pages, soaked them in a tea bath for aging, and then glued them in using gel medium. I had left a few original book pages in the front of the book, so I glued one spell page to the front and back of each of those pages.

And so, after five days of pretty steady work, that is how BoooOOOooook came to life :D

I love, love, LOVE the way Book turned out and I hope you enjoyed the tutorial. You can see more photos in the video slideshow below. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section.

I was actually considering making and selling these replicas, as well as the eyeballs, so if you are interested in purchasing one, feel free to message me, or VISIT MY BLOG and leave a note in the comments.
