I LOVE magnets! I collect them in the places we travel to or have good memories of, I like looking at pretty things on my refrigerator, to me it's another kind of art to look at. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to create for my how-to post but was inspired when I saw a shape of a certain magnet at the store. It was just a square and I kind of liked the magnet so I thought I'd give it a whirl. While creating this project I was constantly getting new ideas and inspiration so I tried to make a bunch of variations to give you some ideas as well. This could also be an embellishment for a frame, some mixed media art or whatever you want it to be. You could make your own coasters if it was a bigger size, that is all up to you and whatever the size of the object is that you mold.
I first started with the standard mixed media paper collage look with an inspirational word, I really loved making these and was kicking myself for not making more than one mold of the original magnet, I will be making more soon.

I mixed up some Amazing Mold Putty and formed it around the magnet. When the mold was cured, I mixed up some Amazing Casting Resin... which is a fave of mine because it doesn't take long to cure.
This is my cured magnet cast in Amazing Casting Resin. It has some bumps in it but it is OK because I am collaging over it. It's the perfect canvas for what I'm creating.
Next I grabbed my bits of papers and ephemera to collage on with Mod Podge. I thought I was going to use the birds but decided against it this time. I'll save them for another project.

All collaged! :) I keep my scrap art papers and they are great for little projects like this. While the mod podge was still wet I sprinkled on some glitter. Next I had to wait for the mod podge to fully dry before I could continue on to the next step.
I had so much fun I decided to make 3 more using the same papers.
Using a charcoal pencil I highlighed shapes I liked.
Then I wrote on an inspirational word. Next up the finishing touches.
Amazing Clear Cast Resin is just that – Amazing! It add such a nice high gloss to your project and really brings out the colors of your pieces when it's dry and protects it, I love using it! I mixed up a batch to coat these magnets with.
I added in some silver glitter into Part "A" of the resin and then mixed it all up.
I added it and spread it with a popsicle stick. A little goes a long way.
Look at that SHINE!
Let it dry overnight and see how it looks in the morning.
Super shimmery and pretty!!!
After these dried I decided to frame the edges with some ink.
OK, as promised,
here's another variation...
This magnet uses your own photos that you print out as well as an image transfer technique.
I had an extra printout of my girls that I used in the last project post that was perfect for this. You start with another resin squares and cut your image to fit.
Next you add a layer or gel medium to the square, coat it good.
I used a palette knife to spread mine.
Smooth it out a bit and then place your cut image face first into the gel.
Let it dry completely and when it's dry spray water onto the paper and slowly roll away the backing of the paper and you will be left with a perfect image completely sealed onto the surface. (Sorry, I forgot to grab a photo of that part).
Here is the image reversed. I filled in their sunglasses to make them darker with a journaling marker, I added some blue acrylic paint around the image as well as some white gesso to highlight the areas, added in some glitter with a little Mod Podge as well. I then used an aqua StazOn ink pad around the edges to frame it. The raised heart was a casting I found in my casting box, I hot glued it down then rubbed purple StazOn ink to the surface of it to bring out the texture. I traced around the heart with a charcoal pencil.
I then sealed this piece with some
Amazing Clear Cast Resin as well and let it sit overnight. I want to do an entire collage with photos of my family and maybe mount it one wood. For now this is turned into a magnet with a little E6000 glue and a round magnet glued to the back of it.
And now the third variation ...
This is probably my favorite!! I had mixed too much resin and didn't want to waste it so I poured it into the magnet mold and let it sit overnight. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it so I just started playing around. I added a layer of aqua paint but didn't cover the whole top of it, I left some of the clear base showing for some interested. When the acrylic was dry I used a wing stencil I had and painted white gesso over the blue. I wanted more color so once that was dry I went back over with my Tombow markers and used a blending marker to blend the colors together and add some shadows. It had the perfect pop of color. Then I took my a script stamp that I had with the aqua StayOn ink and stamped over the top of it. When all that was said and done and dry I mixed up some Amazing Clear Cast Resin to coat it. While the resin was wet I dropped in a drop of acrylic ink and swirled it around in the corners. Super easy and lots of ideas with painting directly on it. When it was dry I glued on a magnet with some E6000.
Last but not least ...
This is more abstract but it's still fun. I stamped directly onto the white resin square with various stamps and StayOn ink and then coated it with
Amazing Clear Cast Resin. The next step was dropping in some acrylic ink and swirling it around with a bamboo skewer, throw in some glitter and some old dried clear cast pieces for texture and it's complete. :) Glue on a magnet on the back.
Funky little fun magnet!
I had so much fun with this simple little project and it really made me fall in love with the Amazing Clear Cast Resin and working with resin in general. This could be a project you could do with your kids, give as a gift and just make a little metal area prettier!
