Kristie Taylor... an Amazing Guest Designer Spotlight

Greetings AMAZING Crafters! Today we have a fun questionnaire that we posed to our Guest Designer Kristie Taylor! Have fun getting to know her a little better and enjoy the eye candy, too! :)

A little bit about Kristie...

Hi! I am a mixed media artist and Amazing Casting Products have become a staple in my supply stash. I often browse flea markets and thrift stores looking for things to inspire my next project. Sometimes when inspiration strikes I need to make multiples of something, or the item that I have found is too precious to use... this is where these great products come in handy. I have even been known to carry Amazing Mold Putty in my purse – so if I see something that I can't bring home with me, I can just make a quick mold. I have even molded a door handle! LOL!

Some fun questions for the inquiring minds...

• • • • •

What did you want to be when you grew up?
"When I was a small girl, I wanted to be one of two things – either a marine biologist, or a nurse. I went back and forth on which one it would be. Then one day, I realized that I wouldn't enjoy living in a wet swimsuit and smelling like fish all the time. LOLOL! That's when I changed my mind and decided that I wanted to be a nurse. I eventually went to become a nursing assistant, and while working I went to school to become a surgical technician. This means that I am the person that passes the instruments to the surgeon in surgery; i.e: "scrub nurse". And I specialize in open heart surgery. I have been doing this for almost 30 years and I still love it. As you can imagine, it can be very stressful – so I often turn to my art to wind down."

Coke or Pepsi???
"I actually prefer Coke, and for years and years, I drank Diet Coke with lime... lived on that stuff! Then my doctor said I had to quit the diet drinks and I went years without drinking one. Recently I bought one and Eeewww!! How did I drink that crap? It was gross!! LOL!"

What inspires you?
"Oh my gosh, this is a hard question since my inspiration comes form so many different places. Sometime it can come from a leaf on the ground, or maybe a colorful bug. I did a totem recently and the color inspiration for that came from a beetle with its dark emerald green and all the different hues of colors that it had. Sometimes while grocery shopping, I get inspired by advertising... and I have even been known to snap pics of products to use as inspiration later. I just think this big wide world is so full of amazing things, if you just looks around at all the beauty of nature, there is inspiration everywhere!"

What is the TOP thing to do on your "Bucket LIST"?

Sunset at Delicate Arch with background of La Sal Mountains.
Photo taken in Arches National Park, Utah via Wikipedia taken by Palacemusic.
"Ohhhh the bucket list... well so many things, like visiting Ireland... or Australia. I want to fly in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon. I want to hike in Arches National Park... I would love to go all of the artsy retreats... and meet the artists that inspire me. There are soooooo many things that I would love to do. There is just no way to narrow it down to just one."

If you could print any phrase
on a T-shirt, what would it say?
"In my defense, I was left unsupervised"

If you could mold ANYTHING with
Amazing Mold Putty, what would it be?

"An iron gate... a man hole cover with a cool design...
the inside of a huge clock... LOL! ALL THE THINGS!"

What style of music gets your creative juices going?
"My music tastes are varied, sometimes I enjoy some blues like Stevie Ray Vaughan or Nina Simone, sometime I like a little pop music like Christina Perri or Adele. I also enjoy some heavy metal like Five Finger Death Punch or Disturbed, and I also enjoy Death Cab for Cutie and even ENYA... so, there is no way to narrow it down to just one type... they all work at different times."

Myléne Hillam... an AMAZING Featured Artist Spotlight

Greetings AMAZING Crafters! Today we have a fun questionnaire that we posed to our Featured Artist Myléne Hillam of Mill Lane Studio! Have fun getting to know her a little better and enjoy the eye candy, too! :) Sb

A little bit about Myléne...

• • • • • • • • • • • •

As a designer, I have the kind of job that many crafter's dream of: I get to create and play with new craft products. With a job that allows me to craft all day, it’s no wonder that I love what I do.

Like most crafters, I’ve dabbled in many crafts over the years but in recent times, it’s jewelry-making and working with resin that make my heart sing. Of all the crafts I’ve tried, none has captivated me quite like resin has. There is something about mixing the two liquid components together to produce a solid resin that just spellbinds me.

Ever since I can remember, the night sky has held a fascination for me: I love watching the moon as it rises and travels across the sky; I love looking for shooting stars in the heavens; and I remember gazing skywards when Halley's Comet passed by the earth. I'm totally spellbound by astronomical events so I created these Galaxy bangles to celebrate the wonders of the universe.

Some fun questions for the inquiring minds...

• • • • •

What did you want to be when you grew up?
"At school, I enjoyed all the hands-on arts subjects and creative writing. But I didn't set out to be an artist or a writer. In fact, I've worked in an office environment all my working life, but all the while, my love of creating stayed with me and I crafted whenever I had the time. And now I find myself living the creative life as both an artist/designer AND an author. My Art and English teachers would be proud! I guess it shows that no matter where your career path takes you along the way, you can always find your way back to the things you are passionate about and the things you are good at."

Coke or Pepsi???

"Neither. I like to get my caffeine fix from chocolate and tea!"

What inspires you?
"Dreams! My subconscious often conjures up weird and wonderful things and sometimes, the best creative ideas. I mean, how many good ideas come just as you are drifting off to sleep?!! But sometimes it's the materials that I'm working with that provide the inspiration – things will just fall in a particular way on the work bench and an idea is born."

What is the TOP thing to do on your "Bucket LIST"?

Image of a sunrise captured from the International Space Station
by NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman - Oct. 29, 2014.
"My bucket list has just one thing on it… but it's a biggy and it's one I never expect to do. I want to see our beautiful planet with its glowing blue halo from outer space. It always takes my breath away when I see an image of the earth taken from space. It makes me marvel at the size of the universe and how diminutive we are in the scheme of things - it really puts things in perspective!"

If you could print any phrase
on a T-shirt, what would it say?

It's pronounced Millaine!

"Of course that would mean nothing to the average person in the street, but it would be great if people knew how to pronounce my name."

If you could mold ANYTHING with
Amazing Mold Putty, what would it be?

"Kate Middleton's engagement ring. Can you imagine
the fun we could have recreating it in resin?!!"

What style of music gets your creative juices going?
"I like to create in the peace and quiet where I can be alone with my thoughts. That's when my mind wanders and I'm at one with what I'm creating. But when deadlines are tight and the pressure is really on, I listen to my library of tracks featuring the sounds of the rainforest. Hearing the birds sing and the frogs croak whilst a gurgling stream bubbles – now that's music to my ears!"

An AMAZING Prank - the #Cre8time Gift that Keeps on Giving... in Laughter!!

Hello Everyone! Susan here with a little devilish inspiration for April Fool's Day. Social media is buzzing with ideas and photos of creative pranks {did you see the one that replaced the icing in Oreos with toothpaste - YUK}. I came across a cute prank which involved painting a bar of soap with clear nail polish to seal and replace in the soap dish... resulting in soap that doesn't work. LOL!!!

I certainly don't have the patience to sit and methodically paint a bar of soap with clear nail polish - BUT - with my Amazing Casting Products... I could pull this one off! This is the perfect prank I can pull on my husband. I hijacked our halfway used bar of soap from the shower and I have my Amazing Mold Putty at the ready to mold a dummy bar of soap casted in a mixture of Amazing Casting ResinAlumilite Pearlescent Powder, and Fluorescent "FLO" Green Dye.

Can you tell the real from the fake??

Before molding your bar of soap in Amazing Mold Putty – make sure that the soap is dry and totally free of moisture {meaning not fresh from the soap dish}. I prepared a batch of Amazing Mold Putty following the easy instructions and pressed around my bar of soap. Then I prepared a batch of Amazing Casting Resin mixed with Alumilite Pearlescent Powder, and two drops of the Fluorescent "FLO" Green Dye... when cured, this gives a perfect minty green with a bit of variagated swirls – just like a real bar of soap. In about 15 minutes my cast resin duplicate was cured and ready for it's debut!

After a little sanding with an emory board, I sprayed the resin piece with olive oil spray, then buffed with a towel to mimick the sheen of the soap and to gloss up the sanded edges. It even weighs about the same as my used bar of soap original.

The finishing touch is to lather it up with the actual soap and let it dry in the soap dish for your unsuspecting victim.

I'm really impressed with how real this fabulous FAUX soap looks and feels. I have pulled this off several times now... it never gets old... and my husband never knows it's coming - ROFL!! There's nothing like some good harmless fun!

What is your favorite April Fool's Prank?

Some fun questions for the inquiring minds...

• • • • •

What did you want to be when you grew up?
"When I was little, I wanted to be an artist, nothing specific, just an artist. When I was a teen, I spent most of my high school years, attempting to be an actress. For a while as an adult, I wanted to be a singer, and spent a number of years fronting my husbands and I's act, Good Natured Threat, but realized, I'm not so fond of performing! I prefer the behind the scene type of thing, so I went to school to be a Makeup Artist. After school, I did a few jobs, won a few contests, has some fun, but my heart and soul have always been in painting and drawing. Thankfully school helped me explore a new love, Sculpting! And... I've been doing that since!"

Coke or Pepsi???

"Coke! BUT, I hardly drink pop at all these days,
however,  I'll always go for a Coke!"

What inspires you?
"Sooooo many things and soooooo many people! I'm lucky to work in a part time job, surrounded by some of the most amazingly, inspiring artists, their daily creativity and the people I meet, push me to work harder and better! However, first and foremost, my husband! He's been a musician for forever, and his tenacity and drive to get his art out there, drove me to do the same. He'll always be my number one inspiration!  "

What is the TOP thing to do on your "Bucket LIST"?

"I want to see a volcano erupt. Hopefully far enough away to not get hurt, but definitely close enough to be nervous! LOL!"

If you could print any phrase
on a T-shirt, what would it say?
"LOL... when my classmates and I were in school, we wanted to make T-shirts that said, 'I'm a makeup artist, not a magician'. But honestly, that's mean, so, maybe... 'You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it... with a club!'"

If you could mold ANYTHING with
Amazing Mold Putty, what would it be?
"Well... and I think I WILL try and do this – I want to make prosthetic wounds...
you know, cuts and bullet holes etc... nasty, but awesome stuff."

What style of music gets your creative juices going?
"I'm a pretty chill kind of gal, and that's what I listen to. Electronic bands, Trip Hop... Portishead, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation... stuff like that!"
