Lara Hjorthoy... an Amazing Featured Artist Spotlight

Greetings AMAZING Crafters! Today we have a fun questionnaire that we posed to our Featured Artist Lara Hjorthoy! Have fun getting to know her a little better and enjoy the eye candy, too! :) Sb

A little bit about Lara...

I'm Lara Hjorthoy(your-toy), from Vancouver, Canada. I'm an Illustrator, Sculptor, and Makeup Artist! Also work part-time as a retail sales clerk for Opus Art Supplies, on beautiful Granville Island.

After a life long addiction to drawing and art, I spent a year in beauty and special FX makeup school and solidified another great love... sculpture... and zombies!

Now I spend my time, sculpting and molding cute creatures of all kinds, (available for sale at my Etsy Shop: YourToyCreations.etsy.com, painting calm and whimsical worlds and occasionally creating zombie madness! Learning resin and mold making is taking all these worlds to whole new levels!! You can check out my works and Blog at www.larahjorthoy.com or my day to day art stuff at Instagram.com/auntyluluscolours.

Some fun questions for the inquiring minds...

• • • • •

What did you want to be when you grew up?
"When I was little, I wanted to be an artist, nothing specific, just an artist. When I was a teen, I spent most of my high school years, attempting to be an actress. For a while as an adult, I wanted to be a singer, and spent a number of years fronting my husbands and I's act, Good Natured Threat, but realized, I'm not so fond of performing! I prefer the behind the scene type of thing, so I went to school to be a Makeup Artist. After school, I did a few jobs, won a few contests, has some fun, but my heart and soul have always been in painting and drawing. Thankfully school helped me explore a new love, Sculpting! And... I've been doing that since!"

Coke or Pepsi???

"Coke! BUT, I hardly drink pop at all these days,
however,  I'll always go for a Coke!"

What inspires you?
"Sooooo many things and soooooo many people! I'm lucky to work in a part time job, surrounded by some of the most amazingly, inspiring artists, their daily creativity and the people I meet, push me to work harder and better! However, first and foremost, my husband! He's been a musician for forever, and his tenacity and drive to get his art out there, drove me to do the same. He'll always be my number one inspiration!  "

What is the TOP thing to do on your "Bucket LIST"?

"I want to see a volcano erupt. Hopefully far enough away to not get hurt, but definitely close enough to be nervous! LOL!"

If you could print any phrase
on a T-shirt, what would it say?
"LOL... when my classmates and I were in school, we wanted to make T-shirts that said, 'I'm a makeup artist, not a magician'. But honestly, that's mean, so, maybe... 'You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it... with a club!'"

If you could mold ANYTHING with
Amazing Mold Putty, what would it be?
"Well... and I think I WILL try and do this – I want to make prosthetic wounds...
you know, cuts and bullet holes etc... nasty, but awesome stuff."

What style of music gets your creative juices going?
"I'm a pretty chill kind of gal, and that's what I listen to. Electronic bands, Trip Hop... Portishead, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation... stuff like that!"

AMAZING Wiggly, Jiggly Creature Making...
by Lynne Suprock

Lynne Suprock here to take a little trip down memory lane for some fun and AMAZING inspiration.

One day last summer, I seriously bought a box of old Creepy Crawler metal molds! Let's just maybe call it reverting to my childhood days. I really don't know what made me do it... but I loved playing with those icky things when I was an itty-bitty girl, about a hundred years or so ago.

So fast forward to now, and a box of empty metal molds and no goop, per se. Well, while working on some of my other Amazing Casting Products projects, the light went on. The Amazing Remelt reminded me of those same wiggly, jiggly little creatures from my past. Why not see if the Amazing Remelt would work in the molds? And, the most excellent part is that no baking is necessary!

So, per package directions, I melted the Amazing Remelt, added some sparkle, and poured the molds... I was giggly! Here are some of my sparkly, little creatures.

What childhood memories will
you recreate with Amazing Remelt?

I would love if you would leave a comment below to let us know how this technique works for you! Please share what you make with Amazing Casting Products on our website in the User Gallery.

Toys for Tots - AMAZING Inspiration from Guest Designer Jess B.

I have been fascinated by ice molds and have been collecting them for a few years. I did not realize at the time I would and could use them to cast resin pieces. This ice mold is made by Fred and Friends.

I thought it would be fun to make some robots toys for the kids.

I prepared and mixed Amazing Casting Resin according to the easy to follow instructions. I poured the resin into the flexible ice molds. For full instructions on mixing Amazing Casting Resin, please CLICK HERE.

The kids were amazed on how quickly they cured. The resin cures in about 15 minutes...

This truly made my kiddos smile as they couldn't wait to start coloring them.

I am now finding little toy oddities on my craft desk. Amazing Casting Resin come to the rescue to!

What toys do you think you can fix and/or create?

If this has inspired you, please leave a comment and your link here. I would love to see how your creations came out! To see more of my work, please CLICK HERE to visit my blog "thatzuneek".

Amazing Versatility!

Hey everybody, it's Edie,
You know I love my Amazing Mold Putty and the Amazing Casting goodies and this month’s post is going to show you just how much I use these products. Rather than show you just one project, I decided to show you just how versatile and useful all of the Amazing products are. The first project I have is something almost EVERYONE can use. I purchased those cute little red and yellow ketchup and mustard bottles for summer time cookouts and get togethers. Unfortunately, the ones I bought did not have caps and would be left open all the time. Since Amazing Mold Putty Is food safe, I mixed up a small batch and pressed it over each of the bottle tops creating custom lids for each one. The Amazing Mold Putty fills every space, so even the tiny hole in the top is plugged keeping my ketchup and mustard sealed and fresh all summer long. Before the putty had set, I used my fingernail to mark the respective lids with “M” and “K” so even if they are both off at the same time, they still end up on the correct bottle for storage. This technique would work for any jar, bottle or container that needs a cover, so I will definitely be using it again.

The next project I want to share is a set of custom toys I made for my son. Christopher loves those building bricks with the little dots on top (you know the ones I’m talking about) and he has a HUGE collection. His favorite things to collect are what he calls ‘special pieces.” You know… the pieces you only get on rare occasion and you can never have enough of? Yeah, those. I let my son pick out a few of his favorite special pieces and I molded them to see how they would turn out. After the molds were set I mixed up some Amazing Clear Cast and let it set overnight. The next day, we unmolded the cast toys and they turned out fantastic! Now he has a selection of SUPER SPECIAL PIECES and we can customize them anyway he wants. I love that the clear cast almost looks illuminated!

The final project I want to share in this post is still a work in progress, and MAN, was it a learning experience!!! While on a walk last week, I found a daisy with a broken stem and I decided I would try to preserve it using Amazing Clear cast. I spread some Vaseline on an old lid, mixed up my Clear Cast and used a medicine dropper to coat the top side of my daisy. The petals opened out too far under the weight of the Clear Cast and started to stick to the lid. I tried using a toothpick to lift and move the petals, but that did not work out very well, so I decided to try and flip the flower over to allow the petals to fold back towards the middle.

***WARNING – DO NOT TOUCH AMAZING CLEAR CAST WITH YOUR BARE HANDS!!!!***

I normally wear gloves while working with resin, but for some reason, I just picked up my flower and flipped it over. I used the toothpick to straighten and smooth the petals as much as I could, then I let the Clear Cast set overnight. Little did I know that Amazing Clear Cast does NOT wash off with soap and water! It is very oily and it just smears and sticks instead. After a bit of a panic, I remembered a tip about using ACETONE Nail Polish Remover to remove clear cast. I had to pour some Acetone Polish Remover into a bowl, soak my hands for a minute, then scrub them with a cotton ball, but I finally got all of the Clear Cast off my hands. From now on I will ALWAYS use gloves when working with resin of any kind! In my panic I didn’t notice, but my flower turned from bright white and yellow, to dull green and brown. After the Clear Cast was set, I painted my flower back to its original colors and I plan to use it on a canvas I am working on. I hope you enjoyed these projects and I would love to know how YOU use Amazing Mold Putty and both of the Amazing Resins.
