An AMAZING #Cre8time Reveal... the Hidden Beauty of Petoskey Stones

Beauty in nature is found most everywhere... even in hidden places. This is true of Petoskey stones, which are found in Michigan and the upper Great Lakes region. This fossilized coral has a unique geometric pattern that is revealed when wet.

While these stones can be polished to bring out it's beautiful designs – we've found an easier way! By coating stones with a thin layer of Amazing Clear Cast Resin, you can achieve a wet-stone look that reveals each stones unique pattern.

Watch to see more of this amazing process...

If you have trouble viewing video, please CLICK HERE.

**A few TIPS** After applying resin, you'll want to cover stones while curing to prevent dust from settling on the surface. After curing you may have a small puddle of cured resin on the backside of the stones. This can be repaired by sanding that part down, then applying a thin coat of Amazing Clear Cast Resin over the sanded area and allow to cure again overnight. The resin can also be applied using a foam brush or cosmetic sponges.

Enjoy your beautiful coated stones! The Petoskey stones reveal their inner beauty with this easy faux-polishing technique... ready to use in handmade jewelry and other handmade creations.

This technique can be used with other stones to bring out their hidden beauty... like this pendant featuring a triangular stone created by Rachel Whetzel.

What would you embellish with resin?

Sneak in a Little #Cre8time... Ombré Monoprinting Technique by Susan M. Brown {sbartist}

Hello Amazing Crafters! Susan here sharing some monoprinting... mixed-media painting technique that virtually ANYONE can do – anywhere! Monoprinting gives me a painting fix and at the same time I can enjoy the randomness of creative play and make some fabulous backgrounds for other projects.

Just some of my monoprinting tools... all created with Amazing Mold Rubber. I have created many AMAZING DIY No Gelatin Rubber Plates in various shapes and sizes – pouring them in empty plexiglass frames and recycled crafty packaging. CLICK HERE to jump over and view how I created these. The Amazing Mold Rubber is more stiff and dense than the standard Gelli Arts® version, though it's much more durable.

Over my experience of creating these and trying out different monoprinting plates you can buy – you don't need to make them so thick to get the same results. Some of my earlier slabs are about 1/2" thick. I've since made some in recycled packaging that aren't thicker than 1/4" thick.

Don't forget... backsides of your molds can be a perfect slab for monoprints! A lot of my molds are round shaped, too. One side I can use the shapes/voids of mold as a mark maker and the other side is completely flat and perfect for a monoprinting palette {CLICK HERE to view examples of monoprinting with my round molds}.

I selected my ATC size plate that I use this for arting on the go. It's about 3" x 4" in size.

One of my favorite monoprinting techniques is an Ombré painted background. Hard to do when painting traditionally – but this is super quick and easy with a monoprinting plate and a brayer. This background is a great start for building up layers of texture and pattern... one pull at a time!

I begin by applying three colors of Ranger Adirondack acrylic paints {Lettuce, Bottle and Stream}. These have a metallic sheen and dry super fast - so these have been designated to my arting-on-the-go box. I also have a few recycled items at the ready for mark making and adding patterns as I go.

Using the brayer, I roll horizontally back and forth a few times to blend colors nicely. Areas that are a bit wetter create interesting resist areas... random is always good!

I gently press the a sheet of recycled book paper onto the paint and rub overall. This is where your hands get messy... in a fun way!

Gently peel back the paper and set aside to dry.

Some paint will stay behind. This is good – monoprinting is all about layering. I love how the Ombré came out... but it's a bit bright and a nice beginning. I'm going to add another layer to add texture and tone the bright colors down.

I added some white Picket Fence Distress Paint and brayered across the entire plate – right on top of the dried leftover color from the last step. Don't waste that paint! Excess paint on the brayer is transferred onto a blank page in a recycled book which is now a growing art journal.

Since  the Distress Paint is more fluid, it stays wet a bit longer. I let it sit for a minute or two and press a cork repeatedly to make some interesting organic shapes.

Then I press my original Ombré background on top to add a second layer. Rub... rub... rub... then peel to reveal the magic! I had tried to make a pattern with a recycled pill blister pack and that resulted in few marks - but I did press the packaging on top like a stamp to remove the paint. This added several brighter white coffee bean shaped areas.

I'm really happy with this background, so I stop here and continue my monoprinting play and make some more ATC starters.

A TRIO of budding ATCs...

Monoprinting is quite addictive. Out of my short time playing {about a 1/2 an hour}... I have created a half dozen painted ATC book page backgrounds, and started backgrounds of several pages in a recycled day-timer book from cleaning paints off my brayer. It's so much fun!

What do you create with
your monoprinted papers?

#Cre8time Adventures in Landscape #Resin Paintings... by Sandra Strait

Hello! Sandra here to continue my adventures in 3D resin painting. I've been experimenting (and got my Christmas presents done, too) with the technique, and decided to try it with a more traditional style of painting – the landscape.

Supplies:
  • Amazing Clear Cast Resin
  • 4 x 6 Postcard
  • Paint Brush
  • Duct Tape
  • Golden Acrylics – Green Gold, Chromium Oxide Green, Phthalocyanine Green, Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Iridescent Bright Gold

This was surprisingly simple. Although, it took seven days because each layer of resin had to cure, I think actual painting time was about 1/2 hour.

I made some mistakes, none of them fatal, but I'll know better next time.

To start, I used a postcard to use as my base and a
photo reference from my brother's North Carolina farm.

I mixed up the two parts of the Amazing Clear Cast Resin, letting it sit so any bubbles would clear, while I did my drawing and painting. Please CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation.

I drew an outline of the scene, numbering sections of it, each section corresponding to the layer I wanted. I scanned the numbered outline, and reprinted it as a guide, then erased all the numbers.

I painted the base layer on the postcard. At this point, the sky was the only section I was really worried about, because the rest would all be painted over. Once the paint dried completely (about 10 minutes), I created a mold by sticking duct tape all around the postcard (mistake #1), to hold the resin.

Then I poured the resin so that the postcard was completely covered with about 1/8 inch of resin and set it aside to cure.

Each day, I painted another layer. Mistake #2 happened while the 3rd layer was curing. You can see from the photos, how each day I added a few more trees, varying the colors. In the first couple of layers, I kept the colors lighter, and had no real details. In the last two layers, I painted the darkest colors, the most specific details, and I used the Iridescent Bright Gold, which just grabs your eyeballs and demands your attention. These are common techniques for implying distance, even if you aren't doing a 3D painting.

So what were my mistakes? Number 1 was using the duct tape frame to hold the resin. I've done this before with good results, but the postcard was too flimsy as a base, and the tape buckled giving me uneven edges. I wasn't expecting completely straight, but what I got was beyond sanding down.

The second mistake was that I set my piece on a flat surface, but it wasn't safe. Somehow, it slid down on one side, so that my resin cured thicker on one side. This just got worse as the layering process went on.

I'm not sure when the 3rd mistake happened, but I think about the 4th layer. I missed a bubble that formed on the surface. It isn't surprising. I can't actually see the bubble because it is soooo tiny, and I can't feel it. But it casts a shadow. It happened just at the skyline, against the blue, and it looks like there is a distant UFO coming over the hill. It isn't incredibly noticeable, but annoying all the same.

So my conclusion – next time use a sturdier base. Maybe a mixed media board or canvas. The duct tape might be okay with the sturdy base, but I'm still trying to think of something that would work better. And, last of all, I'll make sure I've left the piece where it will stay completely flat until the resin is thoroughly cured.

It took about 20 minutes a day, including the time for set up, mixing the resin, waiting for bubbles to pop, and painting. A good project for the person, who has several days to get a something done, but very little time in any given day.

Painted Posies and #Cre8time Page Marking for #ArtJournaling by Melissa Johnson

Hello everyone! Today I'm sharing a simple technique that I used to add some color in the margin of my Bible. This technique could be used in an art journal as well. I just happened to be working through a Bible study at the moment. I've also created some fun paperclips that could be used in any journal or planner. I chose to use one of these in my Bible to hold my place. I like to use paperclips also to attach extra notes and notecards inside.

To create the artwork in the margin, I started by embossing some flowers using Versamark® ink and some embossing powder. Versamark is a clear watermark ink used for stamping, heat embossing and other mixed media effects.

Next, I used more Versamark® to stamp and then poured on Alumidust to add color. The Alumidust sticks to the wet ink, and the rest is tapped away to go back into the container.

I also used a combination of Versamark®, Alumidust, and watercolor to color in the embossed flowers. I also used some acrylic paint to add some color all around.

To create the paperclips I used Amazing Mold Putty and Amazing Casting Resin to cast some cabochons that I had in my stash.

I added some acrylic paints in fun colors
and adhered them to some jumbo paperclips.

And the final result:
