Resin Painting with Dried Orchids... #Cre8time Explorations by Tracy Alden

Hello! Tracy here with another Amazing Casting Products inspiration post! I will let you in on a secret: sometimes I have no clue what direction some of my art projects will end up going. I can collect supplies, start working on something, maybe even get a basic idea of what I would like to do... then end up making something completely different – this project was one of those.

I have a small collection of orchid blooms that I had dried and wanted to try to preserve in Amazing Clear Cast Resin. I had never worked with dried orchid blooms as they are very delicate, and can easily crumble if mishandled. I decided a frame was the best choice to display the dried orchids and also be able to hold the resin in place... so I got to work.

I found that with the first layer of Amazing Clear Cast Resin the orchid blooms had a tendency to shift in the resin. So the first layer of resin had to be a thin pour and I let that cure to a tacky set. I added a second clear layer of resin to cover and protect the orchids. After this cured, I followed with two more layers of resin mixed with Alumidust or Alumilite Dye in different spots, using a toothpick to drag the colors through each other. This created a lovely ebb and flow of color to the resin.

I honestly lost track of time doing this and found it rather relaxing and meditative in nature. I let this layer of resin cure. The frame looks complicated but it is just four layers of resin poured. No waste of resin – just a few stir sticks, toothpicks and clean up with babywipes.

Singing a Whale Song of Summer... by Lyn Gill

Hi everyone! Lyn here with you today from LynzCraftz. It's no secret that I love Summer... the Ocean... the Beach... the sound of the waves and the salty sea air – so before Summer ends, I thought I would get in one last Summer project. I've named it "Whale Song" for obvious reasons...

I first started with a couple polymer clay whales that I sculpted from Super Sculpey (baked according to package directions). I left each whale flat on the back so I could glue them down. I glued each down into my mold box, then I poured over a batch of Amazing Mold Rubber to create the mold. CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation.

In a few hours, the mold is cured! I removed the originals and it was time to pour some clear blue resin. For the whales I've mixed up Amazing Clear Cast Resin and Ocean Blue Alumilite Dye... aren't they cute?

Then using a wooden canvas I had purchased, I painted it with some acrylic paints. Just a basic underwater type background which will get mostly covered up.

Here comes the fun part... I mixed up some Amazing Clear Cast Resin and divided it into 5 small cups; adding Alumidust to each cup in similar colors to my painted background in 4 of them. In the fifth one, I added a bit of White Alumilite Dye.

Carefully pouring each of the four colors on their corresponding color area (kinda like a paint by number... LOL), I used a stir stick to help move the colors around. I placed the two original polymer whales along with the blue cast whales into the wet resin on the background and left it to cure for 3-4 hours before continuing.

The final step was to mix just a touch (the tip of my pallet knife) of the Alumilite Pearlescent Metallic Powder into another batch of Amazing Clear Cast Resin, then pour this mixture over the entire piece – whales and all.

After letting this cure overnight,
the results are well... AMAZING!

You can see the sparkle from the tiny bit of Pearlescent powder that I added to the final layer of Amazing Clear Cast Resin – it's so pretty! A little bit of work but well worth it in the end.

What end of Summer projects
do you have planned?

Well that's the end for now – thank you so much for stopping by...
Till Next Time! Lyn

Happy #Cre8time New Years... AMAZING DIY Resin Art by Lyn Gill

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Hi everyone – Lyn Gill here again with some AMAZING resin inspiration. This time I'm sharing my first try with resin painting/pouring... and I love it!!! The base is just a piece of Foam Board, but it's the perfect thing to practice on.

Using just 16 drams of Amazing Clear Cast Resin (8 drams of part "A" + 8 of part "B") in the measuring cup... I followed the simple instructions that you can see HERE. After mixing I divided it into into 5 different cups and colored each one separately with a little Alumilite Dye and Alumidust in different colors; then poured them each (except for the white pearl), back into the larger mixing cup without re-stirring.

Then I poured the whole mixing cup onto a foam board at one time and allowed it to settle – tilting the board when needed to get the resin to flow around to cover the board. Then I dropped little drops of the white pearl resin (Amazing Clear Cast Resin + Pearl Alumidust) in various areas of the board and let it cure over night.

**A TIP** If you try this, please be sure to cover your work surface with waxed paper or some other protection as this can be a messy project.

The results are stunning!
I'm crazy about this technique and will definitely try more!

Gorgeous right?!! It was so much fun and I love the randomness of the finished piece... no two will ever be the same! There's much more to come in the New Year – I promise!

Do you have any crafty New Years resolutions?

Well than you so much for joining me again here at Amazing Casting Products – Hope you have an Amazing New Year!... Till Next Time! Lyn

Mirror, Mirror on the #Cre8time Wall... SpOoky Frame REDUX by Lara Hjorthoy

Hello Artists! Lara here and its my personal favorite time of the year... changing leaves, fall storms, rainy sweater weather, my birthday and of course – HALLOWEEN!!!

So, what have I got in store?
How about this!!!

I wanted to make a different sort of decoration for this Halloween, since my "living room" is largely my studio these days, I wanted something I could sit on my desk to get me in the Halloween spirit!

My steps for this project began with finding a worthy skull! I scoured the thrift shops around town and eventually found a small plastic skull that I thought would be a delicious mold, using the Amazing Mold Putty!

I wanted this skull to glow for this project and have a spooky vibe to it, so I used the Alumilite dye in violet for some colour, but mixed in some Alumilite Phosphorescent powder as well. I mixed a small amount of Amazing Clear Cast Resin and added both of those products to it and mixed well!

I waited a little bit to allow the bubbles to pop a bit and then poured it into my mold – with a very thin stream to make sure any additional bubbles popped along the way!

While I waited, I prepped my found frame! This is also a great find from the same Thrift Store! I wanted something that was a bit ornate and sprayed the frame a matte black! It looked so cool all painted up! This particular frame has a backing attached to it and was perfect as there is quite the depth between the back and the front, so it has lots of room to pour more resin!

I glued the backing using Gorilla glue and let that dry, making sure that there was no holes along the seam. I want my resin to pool in the center!

Once the skull had cured, and the frame had sealed I added the skull into the centre of the frame, and mixed up another batch of Amazing Clear Cast Resin and added more Violet dye. I made it a bit darker this time as I wanted to it to look dark and spooky and poured the resin into the frame! Here it is wet and starting to cure {sorry for the reflection}!

After the proper drying time... THIS is what happened!

My spooky skull desk picture! That glows in the dark!

I have more Halloween Inspired projects coming up and I know my fellow Creatives have some great projects in store as well! Make sure you follow the Amazing Casting Products Blog to see all the cool projects that come to life!

What will you make for your Halloween!?

Until next time, have a spooooooooooky day!!!!!

#Cre8time Explorations... Radiating Copper by Kristie Taylor

Greetings! We welcome back our Guest Creative, Kristie Taylor who has joined us this month on the Amazing Casting Products blog... and today she's created a masterpiece radiating with movement and dimension. That's right folks – all this luscious color is resin! Follow along as she shows you how to paint with Amazing Clear Cast Resin

• • • • • • • • •

I am so in love with the way the Amazing Clear Cast Resin looks. I wanted to use it to decorate a canvas and highlight the way the resin moves and flows. This resin is perfect for mixed media type of applications and can be used in so many ways!

So I used Alumilite Copper Metallic Powder and Alumilite Dyes to color the clear cast resin – and used as I would with paint to create dimensional layers.

For this project I used a square wooden block as my canvas. I placed the block on something so that the resin can drip over the edges.

Mix equal parts of Amazing Clear Cast Resin
add Violet Dye and stir until mixed.

Add Copper Metallic Powder to mixture, stir and pour over canvas. Use a popsicle stick to "stir" in circular pattern and move color around.

Just look at all that awesome color! Tilt the block to allow Amazing Clear Cast Resin to move and flow over the sides. Let this sit until it gels slightly {about 30 minutes}.

Mix another batch of Amazing Clear Cast Resin and Red Dye with Copper Metallic Powder {I used three drops of dye and a popsicle stick scoop of metallic powder}, and stir until mixed.

Pour mixture over canvas in a circular pattern. Allow this red layer to move around for a few minutes, then allow this layer to gel slightly.

Mix another batch of Amazing Clear Cast Resin with only Copper Metallic Powder and pour over slightly gelled blue layer allowing resin to run off edges.

Move color around and use a stick to draw in spirals.

Allow resin to cure overnight.

I rubbed Vintage Photo Distress Stain
on the edges to finish off the raw wood.

Mix a batch of Amazing Clear Cast Resin and Yellow Dye and Copper Metallic Powder. Pour yellow mixture in a spiral pattern over dried red layer.

Use tweezers to place bugle beads into the wet resin,
forming a sun shape in the center.

I used the popsicle stick to draw "rays" into
the yellow layer. Allow resin to cure over night.

To finish off I added a metal finding to the center,
and filigree corners layered with copper wire.

"Radiating Copper"

How would you paint with resin?

I hope you have enjoyed this project and that I have
given you some inspiration to try something new!

Splish-Splash with Amazing Clear Cast!!! Having a #Cre8time Pool Party with Lara Hjorthoy

Hi Friends! So this week for my inspiration post, I'd like to share a project I've waited on for almost a year now... a summertime inspired, project!

We all know a couple of happy old ladies, who wouldn't be happier than sunning in a pool! However, these two ladies have perhaps had a bit too much sun!

For this project, I used a cradled wood panel and a picture frame and created the pool, by painting the inside of the panel, trompe-l'oeil style. Then attached a piece of plexiglass between the frame and the painted panel. After sealing the sides, I used our Amazing Clear Cast Resin tinted ever so slightly and poured it over the entire plexiglass surface! Placing the ladies directly into the wet resin. Once it all dried, overnight, I added a couple layers of heavy gel medium for texture and... boom!

Ladies in a pool!

After all this work, I'm jealous I'm not in there too! How about you?

What pool related goodies will you
come up with this summer?

Hope you enjoyed this week's inspiration! Join me soon for another how to.
Have fun, stay sunburn free Lara

#Cre8time Adventures in Landscape #Resin Paintings... by Sandra Strait

Hello! Sandra here to continue my adventures in 3D resin painting. I've been experimenting (and got my Christmas presents done, too) with the technique, and decided to try it with a more traditional style of painting – the landscape.

Supplies:
  • Amazing Clear Cast Resin
  • 4 x 6 Postcard
  • Paint Brush
  • Duct Tape
  • Golden Acrylics – Green Gold, Chromium Oxide Green, Phthalocyanine Green, Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Iridescent Bright Gold

This was surprisingly simple. Although, it took seven days because each layer of resin had to cure, I think actual painting time was about 1/2 hour.

I made some mistakes, none of them fatal, but I'll know better next time.

To start, I used a postcard to use as my base and a
photo reference from my brother's North Carolina farm.

I mixed up the two parts of the Amazing Clear Cast Resin, letting it sit so any bubbles would clear, while I did my drawing and painting. Please CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation.

I drew an outline of the scene, numbering sections of it, each section corresponding to the layer I wanted. I scanned the numbered outline, and reprinted it as a guide, then erased all the numbers.

I painted the base layer on the postcard. At this point, the sky was the only section I was really worried about, because the rest would all be painted over. Once the paint dried completely (about 10 minutes), I created a mold by sticking duct tape all around the postcard (mistake #1), to hold the resin.

Then I poured the resin so that the postcard was completely covered with about 1/8 inch of resin and set it aside to cure.

Each day, I painted another layer. Mistake #2 happened while the 3rd layer was curing. You can see from the photos, how each day I added a few more trees, varying the colors. In the first couple of layers, I kept the colors lighter, and had no real details. In the last two layers, I painted the darkest colors, the most specific details, and I used the Iridescent Bright Gold, which just grabs your eyeballs and demands your attention. These are common techniques for implying distance, even if you aren't doing a 3D painting.

So what were my mistakes? Number 1 was using the duct tape frame to hold the resin. I've done this before with good results, but the postcard was too flimsy as a base, and the tape buckled giving me uneven edges. I wasn't expecting completely straight, but what I got was beyond sanding down.

The second mistake was that I set my piece on a flat surface, but it wasn't safe. Somehow, it slid down on one side, so that my resin cured thicker on one side. This just got worse as the layering process went on.

I'm not sure when the 3rd mistake happened, but I think about the 4th layer. I missed a bubble that formed on the surface. It isn't surprising. I can't actually see the bubble because it is soooo tiny, and I can't feel it. But it casts a shadow. It happened just at the skyline, against the blue, and it looks like there is a distant UFO coming over the hill. It isn't incredibly noticeable, but annoying all the same.

So my conclusion – next time use a sturdier base. Maybe a mixed media board or canvas. The duct tape might be okay with the sturdy base, but I'm still trying to think of something that would work better. And, last of all, I'll make sure I've left the piece where it will stay completely flat until the resin is thoroughly cured.

It took about 20 minutes a day, including the time for set up, mixing the resin, waiting for bubbles to pop, and painting. A good project for the person, who has several days to get a something done, but very little time in any given day.
