#Resin Rocks! AMAZING #DIY Jewelry by Featured Artist Katie Smith

I'm the Indie Crafts editor over at CraftGossip which means I'm always looking at new stylish tutorials to feature and keeping up with the trends. One of the trends that is pretty popular right now is tribal themed items. I decided to make a necklace inspired by that trend.

While I was up in Oklahoma earlier this month, we stopped at a tiny rock shop and I picked up a few of these 50 cent arrowheads. I decided to try making a mold using them, so that I could make some resin arrowheads!

I started by mixing up a bit of Amazing Mold Putty and mashing my real arrowheads down into it. I let it cure for 20ish minutes before pulling them out {CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}.

I love how quickly you can make molds with this stuff!

To make my resin arrowheads I first brushed a tiny bit

Then I whipped up a batch of Amazing Casting Resin and added a little bit of Alumilite Dye into it and poured it into my mold {CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}.

**TIP** I always have an extra small mold on hand as well in case I have any extra resin, I'll pour it in to there.

While the resin was still liquidy, I placed some jewelry eye pins into my arrowheads so that I could use them on a necklace (without drilling holes or gluing eye pins to them).

The Amazing Casting Resin cures pretty quick, so I pulled these 3 arrowheads out and made a half a dozen more in other colors.

You can see the original arrowheads on the left, and my resin arrowheads on the right. I love that I can make them in different colors!

Katie Smith... an Amazing Featured Artist Spotlight

Greetings AMAZING Crafters! Today we have a fun questionnaire that we posed to our Featured Artist Katie Smith! Have fun getting to know her a little better and enjoy the eye candy, too! :) Sb

A little bit about Katie...

Some fun questions for the inquiring minds...

• • • • •

What did you want to be when you grew up?
"An artist! I never really had any big plans, I just wanted to make art. Now I have my own blog, design for multiple companies, been published, and have my own etsy shop! It's a great life! Although at one point I did consider both a scuba diver and a flight attendant. ;)"

Coke or Pepsi???

"Well, I don't actually drink cokes, I'm a tea drinker!
But, I'm from Texas, so I call them all *Cokes*."

What inspires you?
"Colors are my main inspiration, as well as pinterest, books, other artists and nature. I could stare up at the stars all the time and be inspired."

What is the TOP thing to do on your "Bucket LIST"?

Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska — The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, shines above Bear Lake.
Photo from Wikipedia HERE - a United States Air Force photo by Senior Airman Joshua Strang.
"Visit Alaska! This is something I've wanted to do since I was a kid and hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later. I also want to see the Northern Lights."

If you could print any phrase
on a T-shirt, what would it say?
"Wow, so many options! You don't actually want me to choose, do you??  I'm a total nerd though, so it would probably be a reference to Star Trek or some other geeky thing. Although I don't have any "crafting" themed shirts so I guess I could do an art themed shirt."

If you could mold ANYTHING with
Amazing Mold Putty, what would it be?

"As I mentioned before, I'm a tea drinker!
It might be neat to make little tea cups!"

What style of music gets your creative juices going?
"My music tastes are a bit all over the place. My *favorite* music to listen to while I create would have to be film scores, like the sound tracks for epic movies like Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, etc. However I also love 60's, 80's, Classical, Techno, Musicals, etc. Like I said, I like a bit of everything, except maybe country."

Gummy Bears are the KEY to #Cre8time... AMAZING Inspiration by Featured Artist Katie Smith

For my inspiration post, I wanted to share these key chains I made and shared on my blog at the beginning of the year.

I was inspired to bust out my resin supplies when I had the idea to make resin gummy bears. I mean, What's cooler than resin gummy bears?? Maybe resin gummy bear key chains! I'm thrilled with how they turned out, they look just like the real thing to me!

I took pictures of how I made the mold, so if you want
to make your own faux gummy bears, here's how:

Supplies: Amazing Mold Putty, Amazing Clear Cast Resin, Alumilite Dye, Gummy Bears, keyrings and a few jumprings and eyehooks.

Note - when picking out your gummy bears to use for the mold make sure not to get any defective bears! You don't want one that's missing a leg.

1. Start by mixing equal amounts of the mold putty together, until they're one color.

2. Next form your mold into a strip that's about 1.5"-2" tall and wide enough for a few gummies. Don't spread your putty out too thin though, you want it sturdy.

3. Place however many gummy bears will fit into your mold, pressing them in firmly. Make sure the Amazing Mold Putty squeezes in around them.

4. Let your Amazing Mold Putty completely dry, following the instructions on the container and then remove your gummy bears {CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}.

5. Now you can mix up some Amazing Clear Cast Resin and pour it in to your mold to make faux gummy bears! I used clear resin, mixing in a little bit of Alumilite dye into it to create the color of the gummy bears {CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}.

I turned my gummy bears into keychains, just using
a keyring and a few jumprings and eyehooks.

What would you do with resin gummy bears?
