Capped Off and WINE-ing About It... #Cre8time Discoveries by Sandra Strait

Much of what a design team does is experimental. I'm here today to share some experiments I did with Amazing Casting Products and some wine foil caps that a friend gave me. She was closing her wine shop after 15 years, and had bags full of the caps. You've probably noticed the beautiful designs embossed into the top of bottles of wine. They are awesome, but the foil is flimsy, and the embossing is shallow. I didn't think they would work for molding.

So, of course, I tried molding them, anyway.

I picked out a few caps, looking for variation in the complexity and depth of embossing. One of them, I cut around the edges and flattened.

Uh-oh! I tried molding and casting a couple of them, and they just weren't flat enough. The foil caved in in places and I ended up with lumpy, warped discs. Surprisingly, though, the detail was good where there was no warping.

'What a shame', I thought. Then I started thinking. I had flattened the caps as much as possible, then pushed them into the mold putty. One, I stretched the putty over the cap. Neither way worked because the foil was too flimsy.

But the detail was also debossed inside the caps. What if I used the inside of the caps?

Eureka!

Because Amazing Mold Putty sets fairly quickly, I mixed up enough of Part "A" and "B" for about two caps at once and pushed them into the caps.

Success! And the detail was even better than before. I could have stopped here, and use the putty as stamps, but I wanted to make resin discs. So I mixed up more mold putty and made ridges around each mold.

I dusted each mold with a different color of Alumidust...

...and then mixed up Parts "A" and "B" of Amazing Casting Resin. It only takes about 5 minutes for the resin to set (setting time differs according to the temperature). CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation.

Since the molds were so shallow, I mixed up more of the resin than needed, and I drizzled the left-over into shapes (which you can see in the first photo). I also trimmed off excess resin from the discs. No waste though. I'll use all these pieces as embellishments for art journals and mixed media canvases.

I was happy with the result, but again, I got to thinking. I had plans to use the wonderful Gelli Arts® Gel Printing Plate that a creative friend had sent me... and I wondered how well these discs would work to leave impressions on the gelli plate. But that meant getting paint all over them.

Then I thought – two birds with one mold! I'd make up another set of discs without the Alumidust, and use those to make impressions. And at the same time, I be painting the discs with paint off the gelli plate! Oh, I was so excited, I was flapping my arms, LOL!

This post is already lengthy, so I won't go through the Gelli monoprinting process, but you can find out more about it on the Gelli Arts® blog. If you don't have one of these plates... you can do a DIY version with Amazing Mold Rubber – CLICK HERE to see how make a custom Amazing No-Gelatin Printing Plate.

I was happy on all counts. The amount of paint on the plate made a difference. In some cases, it obscured the detail, but the imprint still looked cool.

The same thing occurred with the paint job on the discs. The best ones came when there wasn't too much paint on the plate.

Here are a couple of my favorite pages from the printing session. All around, I think I stumbled on a fun way to get the most from my casting and printing projects.

I hope you've enjoyed my 'wine-ing' today, and that I've inspired you to experiment yourself.

#Cre8time for Your Own Upcycled Art Journal... AMAZING Inspiration by Melissa Johnson

Hi everyone! Melissa here with my first Inspiration post for Amazing Casting Products. I am excited and grateful to be working with such a talented group of artists and these truly AMAZING products!

One of my favorite things to do is play in my art journals. I have several different types that I like to work in. When I checked the mail at my office the other day, I found one of those huge ULine catalogs. They are pretty thick and sturdy. After looking at it, I thought it might make a cool journal.

I started out by gluing several pages together to make them thicker, and then ripping a lot of the pages out. I didn't want the book to be too big. These will make great journal pages later, due to the slightly rippled texture created by gluing so many pages together.

The cover is always the fun part! I gesso'd it, to give it some "tooth" to accept my paint and heavy body gesso. Lots of paint layers and inks follow, along with a few collage bits. I finished it off with a thick coat of Amazing Clear Cast Resin with a little dusting of the Alumilite Metallic Powder in gold.

In my stash I had a neat little chipboard art doll that I altered using several different products. I cast an antique brass piece that has some little cupids on it with the Amazing Mold Putty and Amazing Casting Resin. Then I whipped up a batch of the Amazing Clear Cast Resin (one of my personal favorite products for my mixed media projects), mixed with a drop or two of the Alumilite Red Dye and covered her wings using a stir stick.

Then I swirled in a tiny bit of the Alumilite Gold Metallic Powder with the tip of a pin to give it a marbled look. I also cast a cabochon and covered it with red dye mixed with acrylic glazing liquid. I like trying out mixing different mediums with the dye to see how they react!

And here is the finished product with a few close ups!

Introducing our AMAZING Featured Artist for November... Heather Kindt

Happy Friday! Today we continue our "Featured Artist" series here at the Amazing Crafting Products blog. Each month we feature one artist who will share a special project and some inspiration using Amazing Crafting Products. We are proud to have Heather Kindt join us as our Featured Artist for November.

Our featured artist this month is an artist who became introduced to Amazing Crafting Products as a designer with the Frog Dog Studio Design Team. We are excited to welcome Heather and to take a peek into her mixed media and dimensional world as she plays with Amazing Crafting Products.

A little bit about Heather...

I currently live in West Des Moines, Iowa, but I mostly grew up in Denver, Colorado. Growing up I was not artistic or creative, but I have always been a fan of Impressionistic art and bold colors. It wasn't until my son was born that I started creating with paper. Five years ago I discovered art journaling.

The more I experimented with my art, the more media I got hooked on. From journal pages, I went to canvases and started including dimentional objects. Sometimes called "Assemblage" which led to making artsy jewelry. From paint, ink, watercolor, stamping, paper, tape, found objects, fabric, encaustics, beads, crystals, and resin to drawing pencils, there are almost no media that I don't like!

Online I share art adventures on my Facebook page, Heather Marie Kindt. I have also had great support from Stampington and Co. in the ten issues I have been published in, including this year on the covers of Art Journaling Winter 2014, Summer 2014, and Somerset Apprentice Autumn 2014 issues.

Mixed Media comes ALIVE when Painting with Resin... AMAZING Inspiration from Maria Soto

Hi there, this is Maria bringing you another inspiration post. I wanted to make a mixed media project and decided to use Amazing Casting Resin the way you would use gesso or modeling cream. I did use the Amazing Casting Resin on a previous project to give lots of dimension, but I wanted to try it on paper this time. I decided to use it around the tissue for dimension and also as an adhesive for the plastic mesh I used, and also for the hair on both images. Please {click here} to visit my blog to see my creative process and how this piece came to life.

Here you can see the Amazing Casting Resin curing. It changes from clear to white – once it becomes completely white it is done. I poured about three times on this piece, painting the resin in between.

This is the final piece, you can see some of the detail in the photo – but in real life there's a lot of dimension from using the Amazing Casting Resin... just the effect I was looking for.

Please CLICK HERE to see the full process.

I hope I have inspired you try Amazing Casting Resin in different ways. I love to experiment and to find as many uses as I can from the products I love to craft with. You can be sure that I will be using resin in my mixed media journals from now on – and experimenting to find different results.

How will you use resin to add dimension
in your mixed media projects?
