Hello Amazing Crafters! Susan sharing some creative inspiration today. I'm always on the hunt for interesting objects and vintage hardware to mold/cast with Amazing Mold Putty and Amazing Casting Resin. I was thrilled when I happened upon this rusty vintage keyhole from one of my favorite vintage purveyors.
This vintage brass keyhole was pulled from an old barn – very worn, dirty, tarnished, with verdigris, rust, paint and dents... LOTS of character! I have loads of keys and this would be the perfect companion for them to be used in my mixed-media collage art and also would be pretty AMAZING in jewelry, too!
The first project I had planned for this was to make some keyhole charms for a "Down the Rabbit Hole" swap {inspired by Alice in Wonderland}. Amazing Mold Putty to the rescue!!! I made a couple of molds so that I could cast multiples at the same time. I painted a combination of Gold, Bronze and Gunmetal Alumilite Metallic Powders directly to the mold using a fine paintbrush, and poured in a layer of Amazing Casting Resin colored with Alumilite Brown Dye. With some sanding, a couple holes and wire-wrapped closures... this keyhole is so CHARMING. I hit the high points with some Antique Gold Rub 'n Buff® to really accentuate the aged and rustic look. I love how the mold putty picked up all the rusty and paint crusted detail from the original.
A perfect Alice in Wonderland inspired necklace!
