Dia De Los Muertos - Amor de Familia... a #Cre8time Keepsake by Maria Soto

Hi There! Maria here today and I wanted to share how I came about this project... a Family Shrine for the "Day of the Dead" celebration.

Many years ago I went to Mexico for my grandmother's funeral. My Grandfather had passed away many years before her. When we arrived at the cemetery, they opened her coffin, and added human remains inside her coffin. I asked my Dad what that was about and he said that was my Grandfather, and he would be with her now for eternity.

Until that day I never knew you could do this. So I decided to make a coffin shrine for my project – you will see more than one skeleton on the inside, and also many skulls on the top... representing all of the other family members that have passed on.

Products used:
Measuring cups
Mixing sticks
Acrylic paints and various colors
Paint brushes
Recycled bag
Kleenex tissues
Flowers
Cheese cloth

I had a handful of plastic skulls and also some little tiny ones that are actually double-sided. I used Amazing Mold Putty to make this multi-skull mold. I need a lot of skulls for this project, and making one single mold was not a good idea – so I made this big one with many instead.

First make sure to follow the simple instructions on how to mix Amazing Mold Putty {CLICK HERE to view mixing/preparation}. It's pretty easy – it comes it two parts, Part "A" and Part "B"; and you take equal amounts of each (one part is white the other is yellow) and you mix these two until you no longer see any white, only a uniform yellow putty.

I used a plastic bowl to place the putty inside and then quickly pressed down all the skulls, trying to use as much of the putty's surface as possible. You have to move fast because this sets pretty fast once mixed together. I was able to make 10 large skulls and 7 tiny skulls from this one mold.

Now since I was going to paint all these skulls for Day of the Dead, I needed to use the Amazing Casting Resin. This resin not only cures in about 10 minutes... but it cures a nice opaque white as you can see in photos – and you can also add color to the resin is you want. I just left them white because I knew I would be hand painting each differently. I had extra resin leftover so I poured into a bigger skull mold (I'll use this later in another project). CLICK HERE to view how to mix and prepare Amazing Casting Resin.

I made this little heart with wings out of Creative Paperclay. I did make a mold of this piece, but at the end I decided to use the one made from paperclay instead of the resin, same goes for a little skull I used on the inside of the coffin.

Here is the wood coffin I purchased from Michael's. I painted it first, then played around with how to add the skulls, add texture and embellishments, etc.

I love to use recycle items in my projects. In this project I used this empty potato bag. I painted the inside of the coffin purple, and this mesh was perfect because it matched the inside color.

Here is the coffin, all painted with acrylic paints...
black on the outside and the inside is purple.

So now I'm ready to add the skulls to the outside of the coffin. First I added some Amazing Casting Resin to the top of the coffin – a little bit at a time. Since this resin cures really fast, I had to make sure to work in small amounts, waiting for each pour to cure. It took me a few hours to get the top completely done.

Each resin pour over the coffin meant I would add a few skulls. As you can see I did color some of the skulls black, and then I stopped because I remembered I needed them to be all white. Adding the skulls at first was easy, but then I really had plan where to place them first before adding more resin – because I needed to fill the entire top of the coffin, making sure not to cover up the bottom skulls. This took a while, but I think it turned out perfect. The tiny little skulls were the perfect size for use as fillers.

Once I was done adding the skulls to the top of the coffin, I painted all of them white. Since some of the skulls were black tinted resin, it took a couple of coats to completely paint them all white.

Once they were all white the fun could begin... going back in and adding all the little details of color to each. This took a while but I really liked the end result!

I also added some color to the resin that spilled over the coffin – I wanted it to look as if the bodies had melted away, and all you had left were the skulls.

Here you can see how I added the recycled bag on one side, and then added the heart with wings and the skull made from paperclay. Had to add some flowers... they were orange, but I wanted to distress them. So I painted them all black, then I added back some red, orange and black. The heart as you can see was painted black, then I added some red and white and the word "amor" which means "Love". The tiny skull was painted all white, then detailed with bright colors.

This close up shows the final look on the inside of the coffin, You can see the three bodies I added on the right side of the coffin. I used two kleenex tissues to cover the bodies and then added Amazing Casting Resin colored with Black Dye with a piece of cheese cloth over the cured resin. I painted over these materials to give them more dimension.

Here are more detail views of the finished inside of my coffin shrine.

This project took me about three days to start and finish. Once I was happy with everything, I took it to my office and created a little setting to celebrate my loved ones that have moved on... then brought it back home for the traditional celebration including food and lighted candles with my family.

A #Cre8time Celebration of Color... Dia De Los Muertos Shrine by Krisite Taylor

Hello all of you Amazing Casting lovers! Kristie Taylor here with a little Dia De Los Muertos inspiration for you! I love the Mexican holiday celebrated between October 31st and November 2nd. This multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family who have died. This celebration is believed to help support their spiritual journey. Some of the traditions associated with this holiday are honoring the departed with favorite foods and beverages, bringing marigolds and offerings to the grave site as well as building shrines to honor them.

The shrines can be simple like this one...

Or quite elaborate like this one which was created to honor multiple people.

I love the bright vivid colors of this holiday which is mixed with a sort of macabre tradition of using skulls and skull like face paint to represent and honor the dead.

So after browsing the internet and enjoying reading about the traditions of this elaborate celebration – I was inspired!

And I used all of these bright colors and vivid imagery to create this piece...

I used lots of goodies from Retro Cafe Art Gallery
and of course... Amazing Mold Putty!

I used Amazing Casting Resin to make these two
small frames which I transformed with colorful paints.

I hope you will use your Amazing Casting Products to create your own homage to this beautiful Mexican holiday that Celebrates the dead and the living.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! ~ Kristie

#Cre8time Death Becomes Her... by Lyn Gill

Hi everyone! Lyn Gill here... Wanting to welcome you to "Day of the Dead" Celebration here on the Amazing Casting Products blog.

I have created a little inspiration for you... a pendant! Surprised?
Well, what can I say it's what I do... LOL.

I used some previous molds that I had made for other projects using Amazing Mold Putty. Using Amazing Casting Resin mixed with Alumilite Silver Metallic Powder and Alumilite Dye, I created the resin casts for the base. I layered these pieces togther and with some acrylic paint, I created this fun, festive pendant for the Día De Los Muertos celebration. Super fun and quick!

"Death Becomes Her..."

Día De Los Muertos... A #Cre8time Celebration with Amazing Casting Products

Greetings Amazing Makers! Welcome to November and a special Cre8time event featuring Amazing Casting Products celebrating Día De Los Muertos. Please join us for a week of beautiful art made in the spirit of the traditions of this holiday.

Día De Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, parts of Central America, South America and has now become popular in North America. During this multi-day holiday, Latin American cultures focus on gatherings of family and friends to celebrate the spiritual journey of friends and family members who have passed.

Day of the Dead is not a sad or scary occasion, but a spirited holiday when people remember and honor family members who have died. All of this is part of the philosophy that death is not something to be feared, but a natural part of life.

People celebrate in their homes, creating altars (called ofrendas in Spanish) that display portraits, favorite foods, and special possessions of their loved ones. Altars are also decorated with candles and marigolds—the light of the candle and scent of the flowers (called cempasuchitl) are said to attract the souls of the deceased and draw them back for a short time to take part in the pleasures they once enjoyed in life.

The sugar skull artwork above is created by mixed-media artist Maria Soto.

#Cre8time Decorating... Cinco De Mayo Fleur-de-lis by Tanya Ruffin #FlowerPower

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. than Mexico as an excuse to drink Tequila and Margaritas. It is often mistake as Mexican Independence Day but it is really (according to Wikipedia) "the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862". Either way, in the U.S., we love Cinco de Mayo and the Mexican culture. To commemorate that day here is a southern spin on a Mexican Sugar Skull.

Start with a wooden Fleur-de-lis cut out.

This one is wooden, but you can find chipboard ones
at the craft store. Then paint your design for your skull.

Mold accent pieces with your choice of the molding products (Amazing Mold Putty or Amazing Mold Rubber) and cast two large resin flowers with Amazing Casting Resin. Paint castings.

I had a cheap flower bracelet that molded the huge flower beads. To see that video, click here>>

Use Mod Podge® to seal piece. The Mod Podge® will also act as glue, so while it is still wet you can add rhinestones and other embellishments. In the center of the painted flower I added the resin painted rose.

Variation – I found a Virgin Mary mold online and used it to embellish another Fleur-de-lis. You'll see this used in a future project!

How do you decorate for Cinco de Mayo?

A Dia de los Muertos Celebration... by Maria Soto

Hi there, today I want to share some fun jewelry items I made to help celebrate the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). Dia de los Muertos originated in Mexico. On this day the dead are honored with festivals and lively celebrations, it is also celebrated on All Saints Day and All Souls Day – minor holidays in the Catholic calendar.

As I remember, it was believed that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, this holiday celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties and activities the dead enjoyed in life. I remember all the fun activities we did as kids living in Mexico, all the sugar skulls with names on them, special foods, and games.

I thought I would make some skulls, this is the most familiar symbol of Dia de los Muertos, but instead of making them out of sugar, I made them out of Amazing Casting Resin.

I went shopping for decorations at Party City and found this cute skull ring that lights up, it's going to be fun wearing it, then I thought it would make a nice mold using the Amazing Mold Putty and then it came to me, I needed to make some "claberas" (skulls) to give away for the Dia de los Muertos.

Using Amazing Mold Putty is so easy, all you need to do is take equal amounts of putty from part "A" and part "B", mix it until you have one solid yellow color, and it's ready for the item you want to mold. I pressed my skull ring into the putty to create a mold that I will use to make my resin skulls.

I actually made three molds of this skull, since I was planning on making several, and I wanted to get them done fast. Making a bunch of resin skulls only took me about three hours – the Amazing Casting Resin cures in about 10 - 15 minutes depending on the temperature (CLICK HERE to see mixing instructions). I got lucky because we have pretty nice weather right now. However, painting and embellishing all these skulls took me all week... and I stayed up until 4am several days this week. I guess if I add up the hours I slept this week I would have to say I slept less than 8 hours, but I was having too much fun and I needed to get these done as fast as possible.

The skull to the left is resin, and the one on the right is painted with white acrylic paint. I added jump rings on the back of the skulls before the resin cured... which is better then gluing them on after.

Here you can see all the painting that took place. I thought about using markers, but I love painting – so I took some really thin brushes, lots of acrylic paints and painted each one, trying to make each one unique.

I had purchased some Halloween scarves at the dollar store and some twine at Michael's, which I cut to make some long cords to turn these resin skulls into long necklaces. I forgot to add a jump ring to one of the skulls so I made it into a pin.

These were so much fun to make! I will be making a lot more... some I will be selling at an art fair this weekend; and the rest I will be giving away at our Halloween party to my family and friends. These are several of the necklaces I made.

I added the words "amor" and "love" instead of adding a person's name – which is what you usually do to remember a special someone that passed away and for whom you celebrate on this special Day of the Dead.

Here you can see the mold, the original skull ring and the resin skull pin I made.

I hope that you enjoyed this post and that I have inspired you to take these Amazing products and create your own Holiday gifts. Please share your creations with us.
