#Cre8time Indoor Gardening... Amazing Mini Fish Pond by Sandra Strait

Hello!  Sandra here to tell you how I turned a ramekin into a fish pond!

About a year ago, I saw some wonderful 3D resin paintings and wanted to try my hand at it. I was a little afraid though. It looked difficult and I wasn't sure how to start. But I finally found a tutorial that roughly explained the process and I decided to give it a go. Just for grins, I decided to add a frog and some water lilies.

Supplies:

The Frog and the Water Lilies

I used Sculpey Oven Bake Clay to make a model of my frog, the water lilies and lily pads. For the frog I used an almond as a base for the body. I didn't intend to keep the originals so I didn't bake the clay.

For the lilies, I rolled some Sculpey flat, rolled it into a tube and cut the stems like I was making a crown. I did three of these and nested them. Then I cut out the shape of the lily pads and stuck the lily onto the pads. I made two sizes of lily.

To create the mold, I cut an empty Swiss Miss Cocoa tin in half, and taped my frog, two lilies and lily pad to the bottom with two-sided tape. Then I mixed Parts "A" & "B" of the Amazing Mold Rubber, and poured it in. I used cut up pieces of old molds, that I don't use any more, to reduce the amount of new liquid mold rubber needed, and ended up using about half a tub of the product.

After about twelve hours, it was ready for me to pour the resin.

I mixed Parts "A" & "B" of Amazing Casting Resin. This cures in about 5 minutes, turning white. I ended up doing two ramekin fish ponds, one with a frog and lilies, and one with just lilies, so after pulling out the first casting, I made two more castings of the lilies, painting the centers yellow. Some of the lilies I left white, and others I painted with the magenta.

Painting the Koi

Now for the actual 3D painting part!

The essence of this technique is to pour a layer of Amazing Clear Cast Resin, paint a faint layer of the fish, pour more resin, paint another layer of fish, and so on. I used 1 inch ramekins to do some practice, and found that the first layer before you start painting should be about 1/4 inch, and each layer after about 1/8 inch of resin. It takes about seven layers of resin with the top layer being thicker in this case, so that the frog and lilies were partially under the resin.

That actual time spent painting and pouring resin is probably about two hours. However, each layer of resin has to cure, which takes 12 to 24 hours, so it takes at least seven days to make a painting. That gave me time to make my frog and lilies, though.

I didn't try to photograph every layer.
Here I've shown the 3rd, 5th and 7th layers.

The first two layers are very watery and faint, getting darker and more detailed for the tail and fins. I used the same color for both layers.

On the third layer you're getting a solid silhouette, and at different angles you can see the layers underneath. I switched to another color, keeping the paint thin enough that some of the lower color shows through.

On the fourth layer, I added the eyes and started suggesting the scales with the iridescent paints. I switched to another color, keeping the paint thin enough that some of the lower color shows through.

On the fifth layer, after painting a layer of the same color as the fourth layer, I used the Payne's Gray to add a bit of shadowing along the sides and firm up the shape of the fish.

The sixth layer is the final layer of paint. I used the iridescent golds to blend in the shadow and reinforce the feeling of scale.

The seventh layer doesn't get painted – it's to seal and attach the resin frog and lilies.

There was something a little fishy about this project, but I thoroughly enjoyed doing it. I hope you found it fun as well!

#Cre8time for #RESIN Painting... Mixed Media Abstract Art with Melissa Johnson

Hello everyone! Today I would like to share with you how I created these gorgeous, easy abstract mixed media pieces for my art gallery wall.

To begin, I collected a few pieces of vintage papers from my stash. These papers are pretty fragile, so you can't just go to work on them right away without some type of prep. I chose to cover my papers in clear, silicone caulk. I just put some caulk on the paper and then spread it around with an old credit card until it was completely covered.

When the caulk dries, it makes the paper very pliable. Almost plastic-y. You can do a lot with papers like this, sew them together, paint them, etc. It makes them very durable.

The next thing I did was mix up a batch of the Amazing Clear Cast Resin. For the first layer of the painting I added some of the Alumilite Dye in Red. I mixed that into some of the resin and began to slowly pour it all over the paper, moving the paper around to get the resin flowing.

I continued to add more layers of resin and dye on top. When they move together you can get some pretty neat effects! I also "helped" mine along a bit with my resin mixing stick and a palette knife.

And more layers of Amazing Clear Cast Resin and Alumilite Dyes... (I used Red, Fluorescent "FLO"Orange, White, and Violet). I also dropped in a bit of Gold Alumidust.

Once I had the colors blended in a way I liked, I set the pages out to dry overnight. When they were done I bought a two opening frame from World Market and framed them with a mat. I really wanted to find a frame I could upcycle, but couldn't find anything good.

Here is the final finished product:

From "Meh..." to #Cre8time WOW! Artsy Home Decor REDUX by Aimée Wheaton #MakeThings

I'm a sucker for good deals and I'm an even bigger sucker for things that have birds on them. Well I found this good deal sometime this Spring at Hobby Lobby for $2.99... couldn't pass that up. I loved how it looked like folk art too. I decided to make it pop a bit more using some paint, gel medium, stamps, ink, glitter, pen and of course Amazing Clear Cast Resin!

Here's the original bird :)

I chose lighter aqua, yellow, orange, white
and added pink as an after thought.

I love how it started coming to life already just with acrylic paint.

I LOVE the orange.

Next I decided to stamp the word "peace" because it looked peaceful
and we could use more peace in this world and our homes.

Next I embellished certain areas with gel medium and then...

sprinkled some glitter :)

Getting really pretty!! You can see I added
a hot pink for even more color.

I mixed up some Amazing Clear Cast Resin in a larger batch – I wanted to pour into another mold as well, the same mold I used in my inspiration post last month.

Mix it well and let the bubbles settle a bit.

Originally I was going to do resin to the edges of the piece,
but decided to go to the border of the bird and stay inside.

Letting it dry overnight.

Now check out the finished product!! :)

Well to my dismay the Amazing Clear Cast Resin jumped the border! LOL I will be filling it in to cover the entire surface soon. I didn't have time to fix it before this post. I really like how it made the entire piece just pop! So much prettier to me! Simple project with a lot of pizazz!

I gave her lashes! How could I not?

Shining in the sun.

You can see where the resin migrated here. I'll go back with
another batch of Amazing Clear Cast Resin and fill it all in.

I really like how she turned out! :) What do you think?

Stirring Up Some #Cre8time Fun... AMAZING Inspiration by Melissa Johnson

Good afternoon everyone! Today I am sharing a quick and easy mixed media project with many possibilities.

Recently I've been doing a lot of art swaps with some of my fellow artsy online friends. For this particular project we altered paint stir sticks. You know, the free ones you can get at the paint counter of Lowe's or Home Depot. :)

This was a quick and cheap project to complete. I used acrylic paints, some drops of alcohol ink, a stamp inked with Versamark and bronze embossing powder to create the design. I painted in the details using Alumilite Dyes and acrylic medium mixed with different shades of Alumidust. I have really enjoyed using the Alumidust as paint in my mixed media projects lately!

When they were complete, I coated them with Amazing Clear Cast Resin and allowed them to dry overnight. I love the way these look all grouped together in a frame. You could even drill holes in each side, attach them and hang the entire piece. Or, they can be cut in half and used as bag tags... the possibilities are endless!
